whats the most exotic food in japan?

do you mean exotic as in unusual or rare? Within Japanese cuisine?

There's a lot of great Japanese dishes that aren't necessarily exotic, but are definitely worth trying: ramen, abura soba, okonomiyaki, sushi, yakitori, etc. If you are looking for unusual, try basashi, shirako, or something with whale in it.

Just thought of a rather famous example of exotic (and expensive) Japanese cuisine: fugu.

Hmm i personally don't see what the big appeal is about fugu, its very wasteful to butcher (almost everything in it is inedible) and from what i've heard its flavor is pretty mediocre (however i can't say this from experience). I may try it someday if i go to Japan however i'm not sure.

I don't know about the most exotic food in Japan, but i've heard that natto has an interesting flavor and is a very Japanese dish- apparently its one of those love/hate things like marmite (you either love it or you hate it) and it doesn't smell very nice, however its supposed to be fabulously healthy to eat. I think its basically bean sprouts which have been rotted/fermented with a special fungi.

I agree. The fugu meat I've had didn't seem like anything special. It barely had any flavor at all.

One food you might call exotic is sea cucumber, which I enjoy a lot.

Sea cucumber sounds interesting, is it eaten raw or cooked or both :) ? How would you describe its flavor and texture :) ?

The weirdest things I've tried were:

-jelly fish
-eel liver soup
-Shiokara (some sort of fermented seafood meat)

One that I've never tried:
-Fish semen (shirako I think)

I haven't seen it being prepared, so I can't say for sure whether it was raw or possibly boiled. I do know that it's often cut crosswise into circular slices, and served in a vinegary sauce. Apparently it doesn't have much of a flavor on its own, and is eaten mainly for its texture.

The texture is unique and hard to describe. It's soft and jellylike, but very firm.

Some of the other exotic foods I've had here include jellyfish and moray eel (窶堋、窶堙や?堙? but I wasn't very fond of either of those foods.

It is not about food, but just go to Watami, franchised pubs (Izakaya).
Waiters/waitresses go down on their knees to take your order...
Some people take it as great hospitality, but others don't.

Following is Watami Hong Kong, but you can see what foods they serve.

I heard they caused a service war there.

Can anyone share some good medium difficulty japanese foods that doesn't have any pig's meat in it.

About ramen.. is there any "anime ramen"? When I google ramen I get some quite plain looking dishes, and I would like to try ramen with more texture and with a darker color, the ones I found didn't look the way I imagined ramen would be. If you get my point^^

P.S The only "japanese-ish" food items I've found in my local store have been instant noodles (the ones in a packet http://ungroup.net/jjntemp/nood/nood_mama.jpg), wasabi paste and edible seaweed.

Thanks!

As for something easy to make would be yakisoba, I would guess. I do not know how to make the exact Japanese version of it, but it is simple some vegetables with any kind of meat and noodles that are fried together. Very tasty if done well.

What do you mean with "anime ramen"? There are many kinds of different ramen, from white to almost black. The color of the sauce depends what kind of ramen it is, the noodles are usually the same. Then they add other stuff to it, depending of what kind of ramen it is.

The instant noodles I have tried, have been far from a real ramen. Those are meant as emergency food, in my opinion.

By the way, you should look into Tokyokan, a Japanese shop located in Helsinki. They have rather big sortiment of Japanese foods and other stuff. You should go and take a look at it, the people working there seem to be mostly Japanese, so if you ask nicely they might give a recipe how to make ramen.

Thanks for the advice! Tokyokan seems to be quite good. They have even sushi courses, "cheap" tickets to japan, japanese magazines and much more since they import them themselves.

Kimono is for women, but what is the mens version called?

Need to go visit there this or next week.

Kimono. There are lots of different kinds of traditional clothes, and many are worn by both sexes.

I agree, the only real differences between men's kimono and women's kimono is that men's kimono have the sleeves sewn up at the back, while on womens the sleeves at the back are open- men's kimono also generally have masculine motifs and colors. Women also wear their kimono with a fold at the waist, so women's kimono are generally longer than men's kimono.
