What's the difference between 家 and うち?.

1) 家 is a kanji and うち is a word written in kana. Also うち is on of the kun-readings of 家
2) 家 is actually pronounced as うち only when it means speakers own household, but again most of the time i witnessed it being written as うち not 家 in such cases.
3) うち can actually mean "while" . Example: 熱いうちに食べなさい (eat it while it's hot)
4) 家 can be pronounced as いえ if it refers to others house (not the speaker's one) or け after family names like 千反田家 (Chitanda-ke) to mean family/household.
5) finally 家 can be pronounced as か to indicate profession/occupation. 探検 - expedition, exploration 探検家 - explorer. 漫画 - manga 漫画家 - manga author

Pronunciation and meaning are clear from the context.

perhaps someone else will tip up my reply.

6) うち can also mean the speaker himself, speaker's company, club etc. For instance let's take 麻雀部 (Mahjong club) If the speaker is a member of the club - he/she may refer to mahjong club as うち. Peculiarly if it is manga you may see furigana for 麻雀部 (mahjong club) 会社 (company, workplace) etc. being written as うち (if you're not sure what is furigana - just ask)

An answer you're going to hear over and over again when learning Japanese is, "It depends on the context".

Without any context, there is nobody on earth who can tell you what either of those mean, defined down to a single meaning.

Imagine if you were asked what "bow" means. Without context you have no way of knowing if it is a type of knot, bending at the waist, a device for shooting arrows, or the pointy end of a boat. The situation is somewhat similar.

So what content would each be used in? (Just as an example).

With foot upon the bow, betwixt waves I flew, the wind bowing down before my bowed mast as ice like tiny arrows from the bows of cloud warriors slashed my face like the sawing of a well-rosined violin bow.
