Along similar lines, how far back have you guys bothered to trace your roots (I mean to the point where things start to get lost in legend/hearsay - each family has theirs)? For my family things start to get hazy around 1800

my moms side can trace back to people on the mayflower, have no idea about my dads, though i hear germany keeps good records...

In Europe, it's usually quite easy to trace back one's ancestors 300 to 500 years. Of course, as there are twice as many ancestors every generations, its impossible to trace back every branch (otherwise we quickly reach a few millions ancestors, and that is without cunting siblings, cousins, second cousins, etc for each.). I comlpeted some genealogy work my grand-father had started. We have reached the 11th century in discontinous and 13th in continuous in one lineage (noblesse oblige ).

My mom's side first came from England to the Virginia shore in 1612, and that's all I know. I have no idea about my dad's side. It's something I've been meaning to look into.

100% Finnish, though with Scottish roots(from the 15th century or so) from both of my parents side..
