It was when I was about six or seven years old, my parents took me to this place somewhere in the woods in Japan, I wouldn't call it a restaurant, where they served wild boar meat.

Each guest was given their own cabin with the grill in the middle of the room, the owner would bring you the meat and the vegetables when we were settled. I remember thinking that the meat was too gamey and the flavor was way overpowering for me even after my father cooked it until it was blackened.

The food itself was not so great, but the location and atmosphere of that place which were eerie and a bit spooky made it so memorable that I still remember even though I never went back there again.

Do you have a story of your food experience you would like to share? Was it good, excellent or awful?

My most memorable food experience happened when I was camping with my parents. I was aged... I forget what age exactly, but around 8 - 11 years. Every year we would go camping for a week, in the 'proper' way - ie. not on a campsite, and cooking our food over the open fire, scavenging for wood, etc. 👍

One day my mom went out on her bike to buy some tins of food from the nearest village (the 'wildness' didn't quite extend to hunting our own food!). On the way, she found a partridge that had just been killed by a car (she saw it happen). It was pretty well intact, so she picked it up, brought it back to camp, we cleaned and plucked it and roasted it over the fire, and mighty delicious it was too! :liplick: 🍜 :D

One time i went camping with the others boys from my church (at the time i was still atending...) anyway, it was pretty good, i remember oneday we had ctexas style chilli for lunch, mmmm mmm MMMMMMMM! damn it was good.

but one little person called "john" to protect identities (this poor sod is still pitiful today, hes a star trek geek X100 who never really matured into a teenager let alone an adult), anyway, he was a darn picky eater...and i mean PICKY, his main food was fries/chips......just that, when i inquired years down the line he said he also ate french toast and some other stuff but basically he wouldnt touch much at all, and if all he ate was chips and french toast i cant emagine there was much a good reason for his pickyness except mental trauma somewhere in his early years.

So anyway he bitched and cried and whinged and eventually it was decided to drive him into town and buy him some chips from a fish & chips shop.

Being his best friend at the time (hey, i felt sorry for him...and i was a bit of a noob myself back then...) i got to go with him, and what do you know, i got a huge bag o chips and a slate of fish myself, mwahaha it was awsome, two lunches both tasteh. :p
I never really got why i was taken along and why i got a second lunch with him, i wasnt exactly avoiding the chilli but ohwell.

Thats my camping food story.

My first time in a sushi resturaunt was interesting, i remember seeing a small lobster thing on top of a bit of rice, fully intact, and as i looked at it pass, it seemed to look back as if to say "help me....help me!" and i remember saying in my mind "i feel your pain little dude" i actually felt sorry for the thing. :S

But my favorate food experience was fishing in japan, me and my girlfriends dad, her mum and herself, went into the hills and stuff of japan to go fishing, it was pretty suave, i got some bonding with her dad, which is important, her mums always been cool so that wasnt an issue but yeah, fishing for our own dinner, it was pretty rock solid. I did feel sorry for the fish when they were being gutted but i just reminded myself they were for some good eatin' so it was karma or sommin.
Saying that, im the person in my house thats been sabotaging my parents attempt to catch a mouse or a dwarf hamster or something on the loose in my house, they put down mouse-traps and stuff, so when their away, i take off the bait food and spring the trap, making it look as if the willey mouse has outwitted them yet again.

I know, i know, but i dont see any reason to kill the mouse just because its smarter then you, do you murder chess opponents when they beat you?.

I see mouse-catching as a game, a good catcher can get the sly little bugger alive, after that i havnt decided if i will keep him or take him to a far away park.

So yeah, my best food experience overall is the fishing one, there was a primal appeal to my soul, in my deep wooded japanese valley, next to the rocky little river, fishing for my own dinner. 👍

I plan on fishing in the scottish rivers, much richer and a more atmospheric experience i would emagine, and being scottish, i dont really have to go too far to reach one.

Any time I cook anything is usually memorable because it turns out a complete disaster... thats why I usually stick to microwave and fast food.

I would say though my personal most memorable is when I first tried chocolate covered grasshoppers, since then chocolate covered bugs have become an addiction for me.

girls & food

girls are obssessed with food... (random comment..)

anyways.. food highlight in my life... Gyoza parties organized from my japanese uncle everytime I visit Japan... He makes about 350 pieces for jsut 6-8 people... I have felt like die-ing from gyoza overdose...!!

Eating pasta with black pepper, which actually turned out to be flecks of non-stick material that had come loose from the inside of the saucepan.

Eating ostrich about two years ago. Tasted a bit like beef.

Most memorable? Well now, I've had some "memorable" food experiences, but the most memorable...

That would have to be the time I drank a large cup...full of honey. In 10 seconds. For a dollar. Closely following that, I ate 5-6 Reeses and drank 2-3 Pepsis. Lets just put it this way. There was enough sugar in my system to keep me shivering for a good 4 hours. But the stomach ache that followed was enough to keep me off of sweets for a few weeks.

Ugh, mine was last week... I made a chocolate pudding, which I have made a million gazillion times over the years, but only twice since being in Korea....
Anyway instead of checking whether I was using sugar, I made it with a cup of salt.... when it came to licking the spoon, I realised I had made a HUGE mistake, it was gross, especially considering I dont even add salt to my food anyway. Quickly threw it away and made a fresh salt free pudding, before anyone realised.

I have eaten food in some very interesting places... I cant even remember them all. In Cambodia we hired a boat and had bbq fish on a secluded island, I dont like fish, but it was really delicious, especially the whole novelty factor of it.
I've had bbq's on mountains, in craters and other strange places... one memorable time was when we were about 16 we carried the bbq and all our food up the mountain which is extinct, and overgrown, made our way through the trees to the crater, and set up our bbq... started cooking. Nobody could see us, but everyone could smell it! We had to try our hardest to be inconspicuous...

Because my childhood was during the days when everything "Western" was novel, everything that people take for granted now were memorable food experiences for me: spaghetti, pizza, beef steak, "real" hamburgers, Mexican foods ....

But quite a few of my top memorable food experiences came when I lived in the Philippines for one year (as a university student studying abroad in the 1970s).

Dog meat: This was a close encounter, because I found the look of it very strange for pork or chicken (cooked in ketchup) and the people around me were giggling and waiting for me to take a bite. I didn't....😌

"Shako": I don't know the English name for it, but it looks like a flat prawn. This is common sushi ingredient, which I love very much. I discovered that the Filipinos don't eat it so much and called it "the cockroach of the sea." (Sorry, forgot the Tagalog word for it. 🙇‍♂️ ) I asked someone to buy me a bucketful of it and cooked it in salted water.
I never ate so much in my whole life .... Yum, Yum!! 👍

Here are three of my memorable experiences.

The first was when I was 11. We had a French cuisine evening at girl guides and I was uncharacteristically brave enough to try escargot. It spent about 2 milliseconds on my tongue before I spit it out

The second was when I was 14. Both my parents and my sister were vegetarian by then, but I still ate meat. I used to like steak, but only if it was well done (i.e. carbonised). This time, my mum undercooked it. When I cut into it, blood ran out all over my plate. That was the last time I ate meat.

Inkeeping with the camping theme, I was in the Duke of Edinburgh award scheme at school. On expedition we had a favourite meal - green mashed potato. We would collect stinging nettles, boil them in water until it was nice and green, then use the water to make instant mash. It looks and sounds gross, but it is pretty tasty. We had some fun cooking on meths stoves. Some of the boys would drink more of the meths than they cooked with. Despite several warnings not to, one boy tried to top up the meths burner without first putting out the flame. Luckily the grass was wet, so we were able to put out the fire before it reached the tents!

My most memorable food expierence was when I ate fish raw for the first time. It wasn't sushi, but just a strip of cod that was uncooked. It tasted great, and now I eat raw fish.

It is a lot of fun to hear all these food experiences you've had.

I was always lame about going and enjoying a meal at an expensive, potentious or formal restaurant. I jsut never found the idea of having dinner or whatever at a very popular place attractive. They kind of made me upset in a way.

When I go out to eat, I like to relax and eat as much as I want.

My most memorable food experience is trying eel for the first time in a Japanese restaurant.

No offence but it was very difficult for me to eat it, I just found the taste very difficult to like but out of politeness I ate the whole thing. I never wanted to eat that again.😌

Well, let's see. Probably the very first time I ate sushi way back in 1977 when I was stationed in Japan during my Navy days. I was on the town in Yokosuka with a couple of buddies and, on a lark, we decided to check out a local restaurant and tried sushi. Never having had raw fish before (I don't remember what kind it was), it was pretty darn interesting to say the least....that is until we experimented with something called wasabi. Christ on a crutch!!! It was like sucking down lava fresh from a volcano!! Talk about H-O-T!!! But it was still quite a memorable, and enjoyable food experience for me!

:-)

Never had one as good since.

I'm a fussy eater and don't like spices or strong sauces. My wife and I went on a cruise and I worried I would not like the food, maybe too fancy for me. Turns out every meal was fit for a king. One night we had a steak dinner; the steak was cooked in some kind of wine. Over 2 nights I had 4 of them. I have never had a steak as good as those since. I try all kinds of resturants looking for the "perfect" steak , but none have matched the ones on the cruise, at least not yet.

I have to admit, I'm still thinking about this one.

Frank, I'm a bit worried about your religious avatars recently....ooo.....
