What do you think about Japanese movies?

My favorites Japanese movies are

Puchi Angel #004 Yu Hayakawa (Not just because it has one of my favorite skate spots in Japan on it's cover with waxed ledges and all.)

Hook-Ups - Asian Goddess (even though it shows like .5 seconds of Japan footage and no Japanese booty, still.)

Deep Kiss #8 (As much as I hate Jlist.com it's a great video.)

Ghettocities Clothing Tokyo 2002 DVD (best Japan skate/party/hot girls/drunken acts in Japan video out there.)

Virgin Nippon *ss Slammers (I hate Typhoon productions too but I thought one of my ex-girlfriends was on the box [no not the fat chick] and so I had to buy it.)

In japanese cinema, there is one particular director which i like, Seijun Suzuki.More often than not his movies seriously lack plot and expensive special effects, but thats not why I watch them. The man is a genious when it comes to the use of color, music, and symbolism.In "Tokyo Drifter" he uses lighting effects to change the entire scene one solitary color according to the mood which best fits. One minute a scene might be completly yellow, and the next completly white.I can't really describe it well enough to give it justice. Think about the 20min fight scene in "Kill Bill" where Tarintino changes the scene to B&W then Blue and back to color. One other famous film was "Branded to Kill", but let me warn you now, this is not a movie for people who dont like to think. I've seen it at least twice and i still don't fully understand it. Things like that is probably what got him fired for making "incomprehensible" movies. One other thing, He was a B movie director in the 60's so dont expect the movie quality to be the best you have ever scene, still its a great watch for people who really like these types of movies.

Take a look to Koji Wakamatsu films... is a great author.

Japan and South Korea (and Hong Kong but not as much these days) are making the best films in the world in my opinion. They just have so much creativity and guts, compared to the rest of the world. I mean movies are made to make money sure, but in Asia they still take risks to bring amazing visions to the big screen. Not every film in Japan is aimed at teens either, like movies in the USA are (movies aimed at people over 18 are rare). You'd never see films like Battle Royale and Ichi the Killer being made in the west, and its a shame.

My favourite directors are Takashi Miike and Takeshi Kitano.

i've recently seen azumi, br2, shall we dance, and ping pong. they're all good.

That pretty much sums up my opinion. Hollywood has become stale, and when something good does come along all the other studios jump on the bandwagon and copy it i.e. "X-Men" followed by a billion other comic-book movies.

By the way, Beatnik, I've heard that "Battle Royale 2" is meant to be having a theatrical release here in the UK in March, and a DVD release in May.

I've seen Battle Royale 2, and unfortunately it wasnt as good as the first BR, but it was still entertaining. It had some interesting points to make (its very anti-American government, which surprised me) and Riki's performance is so hammy, its hilarious.

I've just seen Failan (Korea, 2000) and was blown away. *wipes tears* Korean movies V Japanese movies, I cant decide!

Anybody saw Visitor Q (Japanese movie with English subtitle) ? It was so sick and I literally lost my appetite for dinner after I had watched it. My friend downloaded it from the web and now I realized he had played a practical joke on me.
