I think he and the entire rest of the Imperial Family and the whole 宮内庁 staff are nothing but useless and unproductive leeches on the working people of Japan. Nothing but chronic multi-generation high-priced welfare cases.

But I think that he is in all probability an extremely nice and likeable guy.

Emperor Meiji is known to Japan (something like the Kemal Ataturk of Japan) because he, inevitably, saved Japan from the colonial West, made it into a modern nation (a constitutional monarchy), erected the Meiji constitution, abolished the feudal system, made Japan into a powerful nation, and likewise modernized the country, industrializing the country. He is not known well for his authoritarian behavior and also for setting the pace for fascist militarism.

He's a very likeable man. As he is only having a daughter with his wife and not a son yet (which would be neccessary so he has a successor), there has been some pressure on him to separate from his wife and have a child from another woman to produce a successor. However, he stood up for his wife and defended her from the others, which was very curageous!
I hope the law will be changed so that their daughter can become his successor (ok, sadly not too likely, but still...)

Kemal Ataturk of Japan? It's supposed to be of Turkey.
My ancestor was one of the members of Meiji Restoration .
