I thought chuffed meant irritated or displeased. Turns out I wasn't wrong. Chuffed is its own antonym.

Yeah, it's one of those wonderful words that have lots of uses like @Ukigumo said. And it has the double 'f' I apparently have a fondness for: Chuffed, faff, duff, gaffer.. so many nice words

As for the dancing, that seems like a good way to battle calories from dinner while reciting the incantation that will make presents magically appear.

It definitely increases your heart rate, that's for sure. And since you're laughing all the while and your stomach is full to the brim with good food, you end up so out of breath it feels like a marathon. One year we even went outside and ran around the house a few times - it's great fun.

Dame Christie! I never knew! I'll have to visit Torquay at some point now and take a photo with her, just like yours. I'll probably be grinning from ear to ear. We would watch the old Miss Marple series religiously back in the day when we only had one Danish, two Swedish and three German TV channels. It was glorious.

My niece bought a house this year so she's dying to have everyone home for Christmas. The last 20 years or so that duty has fallen to me as I was the only one with enough room (I live in a bungalow, everyone else live in less roomy flats), so I'm right chuffed that this year, I just have to show up, eat, unwrap presents, and go home again

Oh, and fun fact for those who don't know, in Denmark we celebrate Christmas on the 24th in the evening. We start out having dinner (pork roast and duck, mainly) then we dance around the Christmas tree while singing carols and hymns and in our family, we finish the whole deal off with an upbeat song called "Nu' det jul igen" (Lit: It's Christmas again) where we start the dance around the tree, then run around the entire house singing until everyone is out of breath Then we unwrap presents and stuff our faces with Christmas sweets and confectionery

And kudos for using 'right chuffed'. My German friend who is visiting is a bit like you - an Anglophile who has similar tastes in reading and slips English turns of phrase into his speaking. I hope our political idiocy over the last 10 years hasn't put you off us.

At this point, I'm too old to hold any general populace accountable for the follies of their government. I know, I know, "they voted for them", but honestly, large chunks of the Danish government has had me rolling my eyes dramatically for absolutely ages - even some of the ones I voted for. No one is perfect.

I know both but 'naff' is a fan favourite - short and rolls easily off the tongue. And if you scrunch up your nose while saying it, it perfectly conveys the sentiment that something is a bit rubbish.

You're lucky in the USA because you only have a day and a half for Christmas. In the UK it drags on for about two weeks of boring, family hell, arguments, being too hot because the women want the heating turned up, you've been eating rich, calorific food and feel sluggish, tired and generally unhealthy. You're skint because you've felt compelled to buy presents that cost hundreds of pounds (smartphones, tablet computers, cameras) and disposable, landfill-destined, made in China crap. I really disliked that aspect of my previous life.

Now, I have a really relaxing Christmas; eating as I usually do, reading/watching when I want when I want, I buy myself a little pressie I really want (this year, a Shonai tsuba from mid Edō period) and something nice for the other half (this year, a posh silk blackbelt and heavyweight karate dōgi; I insist she doesn't buy me anything although I do like nice socks), I eat normally, perhaps something bad for my health on the day like Christmas pudding and custard and we go round to our elderly neighbour's on Boxing day (after the gym) for cheese and nibbles and a really good laugh! The downtime lasts too long for me but I understand some people work hard through the year and need that week or two off.
