Urgent! Your help needed.

To all of those who are living or have lived in Japan:

Do you know a foreign, English speaking doctor of internal medicine in Japan?

I need help finding one. Why a foreign doctor? Good question. To those of you unfamiliar with the medical system in Japan, it has its kinks, to say the least. (Recently I had a Japanese hospital staff misdiagnose a condition as "depression". Heh, luckily a second opinion was available.) I'm looking for one in the Kansai area but anything near Tokyo is okay, too.

Also, I'd love to hear about what other people think of the medical system in Japan, or about their personal experiences.

While in Japan I bought some contact lenses, had to go to an optometrist. The bloke was great; I know whats up with my eyes since I've had glasses for 3 years, been looking into laser surgery for a while and when I applied for the AirForce was knocked back due to my sight and was given a pretty thourgh work-down medically. Basically in 10minutes the nurse moved me around the room and did the basics, reading a chart (which I might add is awesome, none of this letter junk, its a circle with a bit missing, like a C, and you say where the gap is, up, down, left, right) etc, then into the doc for a few minutes while he had a look for 2 mins.

Now for anything else... considering how little basic first aid any japanese person I've met knows I'd be looking for a foreign trained doctor.. plus theres the language barrier, if I'm sick I want it straight, not in Japanese where I may, in my hypothetical sick state, misinterpret what Im told or give bad information.

Important Note

I'm looking specifically for a doctor not from Japan. That is, "English speaking staff" isn't what I'm looking for. I've already been to many places with as such, and I speak enough Japanese to fill in deficienes. (Funny story, I once met a Japanese doctor who knew the word "dytrophy" but couldn't remember the word for "next week" in English.)

I particularly am unsatified with the training many Japanese doctors recieve. Wakayama prefecture's University of Medical science has been particularly disappointing to me. (Also funny, the university's nickname is "WaiDai." ha!)

Btw, thanks for the link mike! Looks like there are a few Doc's in Tokyo that sound promising. Quite an extensive list!

Most of them appear to be "English speaking staff", but there were a few who seem to fit what you're looking for.

Since there's no way that list is complete, you might want to try googling the embassy sites of some other countries to see if they have others listed.

Thanks. I've checked out Kansai Time Out and a few other magazines, looks like I'll find something soon. Apparently, out on rokko island in Kobe there is a LARGE community of foreign doctors living there. (Proctor and Gamble or some other large company is based there, I think?)

I don't know what your experiment is but
a) he does look vaguely familiar but I haven't the foggiest who he is.
b) my aversion to alcohol seems to have led me to unconsiously pass over your posts without even realising they _were_ your posts for several days.

There are TWO international clinics in or around Azabu Juuban. I went to one of them when I got amoebic dysentry in Thailand (yuck!). The gentlement is Russian I believe, but can't remember. He speaks like 5 langauges, and I recommend him for most problems one would have. It's basically a clinic, so you can't get surgery done.

The other one I've not been to.

I've been to the King Clinic in Harajuku (on the list above) and he's great, although expensive. He is not Japanese and is very thorough. Will milk you for every yen, but I think it is worth it, especially if you're getting frustrated with the Japanese doctors/system. Have also been to the International Clinic in Roppongi/Azabu Juban and strongly recommend you don't go there.

I am just about to move to Azabu Juban so would be grateful for any tips about dentists/doctors that are good, and have some English spoken.
