Economy Uniqlo operator to lift starting pay in Japan to ¥370,000

Fast Retailing, which operates the Uniqlo clothing chain, is set to increase the starting salary for new hires in Japan to ¥370,000, up from ¥330,000, marking the second year in a row that entry-level pay has been raised as part of efforts to stay competitive. The company plans to recruit about 480 new graduates across its brands, including Uniqlo, GU, PLST and Link Theory, this spring.

The ¥40,000 increase will apply to employees entering management-track programmes, roles that often come with the expectation of overseas assignments as part of career development.

It is the fourth hike such employees have received since 2020, with their wages growing by 160,000 yen over the six years. Their annual income, including bonuses, is expected to be around 5.9 million yen, up 12 percent from the current rate. Employees assuming jobs that do not require relocation will receive a starting salary of 280,000 yen, up from 255,000 yen.
