Here's a past thread on "would," "will" (and a lot else that's maybe not quite as interesting ) written by a Japanese guy in the Learning English forum.
I don't know if there's anything out there on 'could' or not.

It seems that I've misunderstand 'except that' in the sentence.
I interpreted the sentence as 自分が実際にどういうかは別として.

That would be "Excepting that" or "Besides that" in English. 'Except that' is more like 'Although' in this case.
言葉から、誤解が生じないようにさらに努力しなければならないね。

or to rephrase it

"That I only really know the forums is the reason why I'm not able to be sure that JREF is a good site."

In the rephrased version the 'that' is grammatically required. I don't think it is required in the original version - but it has the same meaning in both cases.

This is also a perfect occasion to better understand 'if anything, (i'd say).'

相手： Don't you think the JREF site is terrible ?

あなた： I can't say for sure because I have only seen the forum. But based on that, if anything, I'd have to say it is probably a good site.

You're right. It isn't required in the first sentence. This type of ellipsis has become common in modern speech.

I mistook the sentence in your previous post for two sentences, that is,
1st: I'd say .....and the situation.
2nd: Except that what I'd actually say would probably be ...

Let me explain what I thought in interpreting the 2nd sentence. Enjoy it, please.
I interpreted 'what I'd say' as the subject of the sentence,
so, the 'Except that' part remained.
I thought, "I know I have to except something, but what should I except?
What is indicated by 'that' ? Any way, I have to remove something!"
Then, I excepted the 'what I'd actually say' part, in somewhat desperation (I gave up the subject!).
That is the reason why I asked to tell me what you would actually said in spite of that you obviously said that.
（Paulさんが自分ならこう言うということをはっきりと書いているにもかかわらず，
Paulさんなら何て言いますか？と質問してしまったのは，こういうわけです。）

Functionally it was one sentence. But splitting sentences into two is one of those things native speakers sometimes do.

日本語でも、日本についての友好的意見や情報の交換があったり、日本に関しての話題を書き込めるような所は「掲示板」という言葉を使う場合が多いでしょうか？日本では、ホームページ、ウェブサイト、掲示板、チャットルームの間に混乱があることもあるそうですね。

そう考えていいと思います。昔は「フォーラム」という言葉と「掲示板」という言葉が区別されていましたが，今はあまり区別しなくなっているようです。「掲示板」と言った方が通じやすいと思います。大衆化（popularize）の結果なんでしょうね。

ところで，Elizabethさんは「日本語でも 」と書いてますが，英語でも「掲示板」という言葉を使う場合が多いのですか？

Elizabeth さんが書いた日本語はかなり正確なものだと思うのですが，少し違和感もあります。それは「日本についての」や「日本に関しての」の部分です。もしかするとElizabethさんは別のことを言いたかったのかな，と思ったりもしています。

日本語のチェックをして欲しい場合は，できれば英文も添えてください。その方が正確にチェックできますので。

そうなんですか。その区別は何ですか。一つはもう一つより正確でしたか。(Was one more accurate than the other? I don't really know how to say that in Japanese )

もしかして、 GlennさんはBBSのことあまりしらなかったんでしょうか。 Bulletin Board Systemの略で、インターネットがまだ広がっていないうちにBBS の方があっちこっちありましたよ。
