Nice try, but not quite on most of your choices!

well...most people identify Dr Suess with The Cat in the Hat! Maybe what he was thinking of was the actual cat. (the cat does appear on the outside of all his books)

Who are the following: Sargeant Schultz, Cliff Claven, Marshall Dillion and Charlie the Tuna? I have never heard of any of them. Incidently could you call the Loch Ness Monster, or any other half mythical creature a fictional character?
Given the current success of LOTR, what about the characters from the film, especially Gollum?

Sargeant Schultz - Was a character in a (US) TV show named "Hogan's Heroes" ... waaaay back !

Cliff Claven - Was a hilarious character in the excellent (US) TV show "Cheers" ... during the '80's.

Marshall Dillon - Was a character in a (US) TV show named "Gunsmoke" ... waaaay back !

Charlie the Tuna? - I think I may be too old for this one - but I think he's a character in the animated film "Finding Nemo" - I may be wrong.

(Dang ! I keep making all these posts on this thread, which doesn't count - see ... at the time of writing I'm stuck on post 199 ! Blast ! Must find something really substantive for #200 ! )

Aaah ... yes !

Now I remember him ... ! The product is just not so well known up here.

Thanks !

Mario Bros? Nahh! Not everyone plays video games, so they wouldn't be that well known.
It doesn't matter. That's what makes it so amazing, that even if you don't play video games, you know Mario. Everyone does. Mario's infamy knows no bounds.

Thanks for the info Sensuikan San and Jarvis. I have heard of the programme 'Hogan's Heros' but have never watched it. I didn't realise that Cliff's surname was Claven and I have never seen 'Gunsmoke', and Charlie the Tuna was never used in the UK as far as I know, which doesn't really make him a globally recognised fictional figure.

yo whatsup, skeletor vs. dr. seuss, that rocks.

you forget to mention skeletor, yugioh, beyblade, teenage mutant hero turtles, NKOTB. these aren't all characters, but i guess skeletor is quite common, even a bit out of time (20 years)

That, and Dr. Seuss isn't a fictional character. It's the actual author's psuedonym.
but it sounds fictional to me. who is dr. seuss, by the way? i asked skeletor to make him a visit.

well I must say the US media is doing a very poor job then.

I thought the US media was all owned by Murdoch and that is about as poor as you can get :D
Other countries do have their own media and in some cases it is better than the US media. Just because the character is recognised in the US do not take it for granted that it is recognised outside the US. Even Sensuikan San doesn't really know who Charlie the Tuna is and he lives in Canada.

how can the world understand America if they don't know who marshall dillion is..or festus????

:/
