The top 10 globally recognized fictional characters:
1. Mickey Mouse
2. Superman
3. Mr. Spock (Star Trek)
4. Harry Potter
5. Batman
6. Darth Vader (star Wars)
7. James Bond
8. Spider-Man
9. Pikachu (Pokemon)
10. Sherlock Holmes

How about Tom Baker's Dr. Who? Whenever it is spoofed they seem to always use his doctor. And what about Kermit the Frog?

Godzilla is very popular in Japan, U.S. and possibly the rest of the Western hemisphere but not too popular.

Only comic book fans have heard of Doctor Who.

I think Santa Claus is more like a legend than fiction.

Only Goku from Dragon Ball Z is globally recognized.

I think that Godzilla is more recognizable than Pokemon...in fact it spans over a greater number of people. For that matter PowerRangers may make the list.

Can't argue with anyone on your list, Zauriel, not even Pikachu, despite how much I loathe Pokemon. Regarding Godzilla, I don't think the Big G is quite up there yet, certainly not anyone from DBZ. Puh-leeze! Power Rangers? In a word: AARRGGHHHH!!! I get nauseous just thinking about 'em!

Santa Claus, in my opinion, is more an urban legend than anything else, and while Doctor Who enjoys a cult following (I'll admit to being a fan, and Tom Baker was my favorite Doctor), he doesn't rank up in that top ten either. Other than Bugs Bunny, I can't think of anyone to add to that list. Good work there, Zauriel!

Isn't Donald more famous than Mickey?.. seriously?..

Mickey is only the filler in the Donald magazines here.. Donald has atleast 3 mags..

Where's "Moby Dick" ?

( :D ..... just testing the rude word filters .... !)

Mario Bros? Nahh! Not everyone plays video games, so they wouldn't be that well known.
Ronald McDonald? Nahh! Only seen in commercials, and not even that much these days.
Gumby? Nahh! Not that well known either.

How about Barbie or GI Joe?

Maybe even Kilroy?? LOL...nah that would only be in the US!

Barbie? Nahh! Dolls don't quite have that sort of recognition factor, and even then, boys avoided her like the plague.
G.I. Joe? Ditto for the recognition factor. Even though there was a cartoon series back in the mid-80's, G.I. Joe was portrayed as an army, not an individual. And girls avoided it like boys steered clear of Barbie.

ken/barbie, mario brothers: more common than walt disney's donald duck probably.

any statistics about barbie dolls vs. walt disney's donald duck?

and, spiderman/superman/hulk: marvel characters?- any statistic?
sure, spiderman is no.1 currently...

james bond/sherlock holmes are not necessarily known

superman is old-fashioned, harry potter books were sold 250 million times.

ronald mc donald is based on a real character, and some people prefer burger king.

Yeah ! Donald's a lot older ... and doesn't wear pants ... !

(...Dunno about Barbie ! But (I believe)Mattel first bought the rights to the doll from a small German company that once sold adult female dolls to German sailors in post-war Hamburg, so ... I dunno about Barbie ! .... I dunno much about German sailors either ... ! .............I'm worried about Barbie .)

LOL

Who are the following: Sargeant Schultz, Cliff Claven, Marshall Dillion and Charlie the Tuna? I have never heard of any of them. Incidently could you call the Loch Ness Monster, or any other half mythical creature a fictional character?
Given the current success of LOTR, what about the characters from the film, especially Gollum?
