I have recently begun to run out of good films. There are still a few on my list of so called masterpieces or just general good films that i still have yet to watch.

Watched donnie brasko recently, which i recommend to everyone.

But what are your top 10 and why, so that i may add them to my list of ones to watch.

Top 10 'Eastern' films

...I'm gonna out my top ten eastern movies, as i've seen so many western films (good and bad!)

In no particular order (and why!):

The Eye (one of the first memorable movies from the far east i saw!)
Oldboy (unique story)
The grudge 2 (actually preferred this to the first one!)
Public Enemy (really enjoyable crime thriller)
Versus (cool action movie...and it has zombies...need i say more)
A Tale of Two Sisters (cool horror/psychological movie)
Azumi (from the dir. of Vesus...very cool, but no zombies :( )
Seance (little known psychological thriller)
Battle Royale (no reason needed)
Ring (once again, everyone knows how good this is!)

cool movies

check out:
Donnie Darko
Twilight Samurai
What the #@#*& do you know?
I Heart Huckabees
Sin City
Lost in Translation
Ichi the Killer (weird Japanese flick)

that is a off the top of my head list of cool movies

enjoy..... :p

yeah, some cool ones there
donnie darko is cool...but i'm still not sure if i entirely get it!

Heh i did not add mine.

Seven samurai - Just a nice old film
Castle in the sky - Just a really nice animated film
Schindlers list - Masterpiece
Godfather films - again materpieces
Die hard films - Good blow sh*t up movie
Usual suspects - great twist
Kill bill - lots of nice bloody action
Visitor Q - Really a terrible film howeve i feel it needs to be here for shockingness.
Lord of the rings - no explanation needed. Good modern masterpiece
Green mile - well made film

Always wanted to see donnie darko, never got round to it though.

In addition to most of the ones already mentioned above:

Leon (aka "The Professional"): get the special Director's cut btw, world of difference imho...
Memento
American Beauty
Le Pacte des Loups (aka "Brotherhood of the Wolf")
Gattaca
Fight Club
Dune (Director's cut of David Lynch's version, although the recent Sci-Fi remakes aren't half bad either)
Big Wednesday (Serious old-skool surfing movie but a classic nonetheless! Stars William Katt, Jan-Michael Vincent, and Gary Busey)
Le Grande Bleu (aka "The Big Blue"): Beautiful and ultimately tragic film about friendship and competition directed by Luc Besson
Zatoichi
Cube (Bizarre...)
Identity (A bit campy at times... but right up my alley)
Hero (NOT that crappy Geena Davis/Dustin Hoffman flick but the one with the lovely Zhang Zhiyi)
Final Destination 1&2 (Decapitations, disembowlments, ahhh... good popcorn flick for a rainy night)
Shawshank Redemption (BEST feel-good ending in cinema imho)

Just to name a few... :)

p.s. Gingerbread tastes nothing like a) ginger and b) bread. Discuss. ☝

Leon - Yes very good film, never seen the directors cut though, how was it differnt ??

American Beauty - Very differnt

Hero (NOT that crappy Geena Davis/Dustin Hoffman flick but the one with the lovely Zhang Zhiyi)
The very lovely Zhang Zhiyi

The Ring USA vs. JAPAN Version

We rented the usa version first and it was pretty scary, then we rented the japan version and it was actually funny and the effects were lame. Does anyone share this vibe or was it just my inner cynical movie critic?

"Leon - Yes very good film, never seen the directors cut though, how was it differnt ??"

Unlike some director's cuts where the extended footage is a few minutes here, a few there, etc. Leon has one 22 min. block that was cut out from the film (in the middle towards the end). It's right after Mathilda starts her training under Leon's tutelage which really didn't show her doing much in the theatrical release. The cut 22 min. block however has her accompanying Leon on actual hits helping him take out his marks... heh. I guess maybe Luc Besson felt that showing this adolescent pre-teen helping with assassinations on-screen might be a little unsettling for N. American audiences. *shrug* Who knows, heh. I do know that the cut footage really makes the film as a whole shine even more. :danger:

"We rented the usa version first and it was pretty scary, then we rented the japan version and it was actually funny and the effects were lame. Does anyone share this vibe or was it just my inner cynical movie critic?"

I felt the opposite held true with the recent Ju-on/The Grudge release. I really enjoyed the eerily suspenseful and macabre J-version but the N. American release was... a little dissapointing. Then again, any movie with Buffy in it can't be all that bad. 😌

I thought they were both quite lame tbh. I have the Japanese version and i watched the first half of the american version before the dvd stoped working but i generally found they were no better then each other. If i was to rate them i would say that the Japanese was better purely for being Japanese and i could listen to it in there language. But if thats all i can rate them by then it really shows what the movie is like.
I felt similar about the grudge, i acutally just stopped watching and went into my own little head world about halfway through. I did not even realise when it had finished i was so fed up with it.

As for leon i guess i will have to try and get hold of that directors cut.

Hmm! So much stuff out there! Well, here's my top 10 (western version), in no particular order:

1) Pulp Fiction: Far and away, Tarantino's best work.

2) Thirteen Days: A little heralded but excellent historical thriller about the Cuban Missile Crisis.

3) The Godfather: Never mind the sequels, the first movie was, and always will be the best.

4) Jaws: Ditto

5) Superman: The BEST movie adaption of a comic book superhero ever.

6) Spider-Man: The second best adaptation.

7) King Kong (1933): Before Godzilla, there was Kong. 'Nuff said.

8) Goldfinger: For any Bond afficianados out there, this was the best of the lot.

9) Citizen Kane: An excellent film all round, well deserving of the honors it received

10) Alien: The perfect melding of science fiction and horror.

Hope you'll find my list interesting! 👍

And you have imagined right, Miss A.! I've got Batman, Hulk, nearly all of Ah-nold's flicks, the Die Hard and Rambo trilogies, Broken Arrow, Swordfish, X-Men, X2, the Blade trilogy, Con Air, Delta Force, Invasion U.S.A., Enter The Dragon, Out For Justice, Robocop, S.W.A.T., The Princess Blade and four more Bond flicks among many others! And that's not counting all the sci-fi stuff in my library! Whew! Yeah, I just love stuff that pumps up the ol' testosterone!

:)

Ah yes... the movies ! (Gonna stay away from all those 'political' threads this week ... ! Some of 'em are getting too warm !) ....

So ..... ( some of these are real "oldies .. but goodies") - try (in no particular order):-

"The Third Man" ( Orson Welles, Trevor Howard B&W) - Marvellous depiction of immediate post-war Vienna. Shot largely on location.

"The Blockhouse" (Peter Sellers, Jeremy Kemp, Charles Aznavour) Adapted from a true story about a group of forced labourers (in real life, they were German soldiers) entombed in a bunker. You won't sleep for weeks after this "downer"!

"The Party" (Peter Sellers) You've probably seen this '60's flick - but a scream from start to finish.

"From Russia with Love" This was hard - but I think it just beats out Goldfinger - sorry !

"Das Boot" Had to include this one ! Best seen in German, with subtitles if you need them - much better than the 'dubbed' version !

"Christmas Vacation" (Chevy Chase) - Have watched it many times, even in the summer - and still see some small, hilarious detail that makes me scream!

"Seven Samurai" Yes - a classic ! And best seen in the same evening as:

"The Magnificent Seven" ... even if it's just to compare notes !

"To Kill a Mockingbird" Gregory Peck at his best. An old 'un - but watch it.

"Cape Fear" (The first one - with Robert Mitchum) Not so graphic - but beats the heck out of the remake for really sinister suspense. Mitchum scares the hell out of you !

Yup....most of 'em are a little old ..... but darned good movies !

Regards,

HEHEHE!! 🙂 Of course you have Hulk and Batman...I especially like the new Hulk film, which came out a couple of years ago....very well made!

My top 10 WESTERN movies are:

1) Forest Gump (Tom Hanks)
2) The Life of David Gale (Kevin Spacey)
3) Something's Gotta Give (Jack Nicolson)
4) Saving Private Ryan (Tom Hanks)
5) L.A. Confidential (Kevin Spacey)
6) The Usual Suspects (Kevin Spacey)
7) Cape Fear (Robert DeNiro)
8) Ronin (Robert DeNiro)
9) 1 Hour Photo (Robin Williams)
10) Insomnia (Robin Williams)

10. Bram Stoker's Dracula - Even though some think it's corny because of Keanu's corny acting, I love it. Gary Oldman...*sigh*

9. Meet the Parents - Possibly one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. I just love the Robert De Niro/Ben Stiller combination.

8. The Piano - Just a good story. You can feel the heat in that movie. At least, I think so.

7. Legends of the Fall - No, not because of Brad Pitt...because of Aidan Quinn and Anthony Hopkins.

6. Gone with the Wind - A classic. I've seen it hundreds of times, no joke.

5. Silence of the Lambs - The only movie that really creeped me out. Anthony Hopkins.

4. The Professional - Yes, I am another Leon fan. I love Jean Reno. He's one of my favorite actors. Also, the young Natalie Portman. She was amazing in this movie. I also loved Gary Oldman in this, and he plays a bad guy so well, doesn't he?

3. The Godfather(I & II) - Well, what can one say about The Godfather movies? They're pretty much self-explanatory. I like the first two parts better than the third.

2. Muriel's Wedding - Another funny movie, but it goes deeper than that. I love it and I love Toni Collette.

1. The Lover - Steamy autobiographical love story about a 32 year old Chinese man and a 15 year old French girl. Based on the early life of the author, Marguerite Duras. Beautiful cinematography. Great film.

I forgot to argue WHY I like these films....SORRY people!!! Here come my reasons:

My top 10 WESTERN movies are:

1) Forest Gump (Tom Hanks) I love the great character acting by Tom Hanks, and I love the story of a simple man living through complicated decades in American history....which he doesn't comprehend at all.
2) The Life of David Gale (Kevin Spacey) Great acting by Spacey. I love this suspense-thriller, which nailed me in front of the TV. I really like the plot that a professor of philosophy, who is against the death penalty, gets accused of murder and ends on death row....really a great movie!
3) Something's Gotta Give (Jack Nicolson) I love Jack Nicolson - he simply is funny! And Dianne Keaton and Jack fit together nicely in the film.
4) Saving Private Ryan (Tom Hanks) The morale of the story is simply very thoughtful. Is it worth claiming the lives of several men in order to save one guy in battle?
5) L.A. Confidential (Kevin Spacey) LOVE it, can't explain why, but it has to do with Spacey looking so HOT in the film!
6) The Usual Suspects (Kevin Spacey) Kaizer Soze.....what can I say....very surprise ending!
7) Cape Fear (Robert DeNiro) Creepy and great!
8) Ronin (Robert DeNiro) Robert De Niro is soooo good !

9) 1 Hour Photo (Robin Williams) The first time I saw Robin Williams having to play a psychopat! He should play more sinister characters, as he was sooo good in the film!
10) Insomnia (Robin Williams) again.....I enjoy watching Williams as a sinister character...great character acting!

Ooh, we're doing a movies list? :) Yaaaay! Ok, ok, here goes:
(in no particular order)
Nightmare Before Christmas - It's Tim Burton, it's animated with dolls, it's got Jack Skellington in it, and as if that wasn't enough: The music and songs by Danny Elfman are superb!
Edward Scissorhands - A story about a boy with scissors instead of hands must be good right? Yet another Tim Burton, and nothing beats his wonderful dark fairy tale world. Besides, seing a pale, scarred Johnny Depp is... a good experience!
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest - old movie with Jack Nicholson doing some great acting. Actually the overall acting in this movie is about some of the best I've ever seen. Put shortly, the story takes place on a mental hospital. Nurse Ratched is as evil as can be!
Episodes 4,5 and 6 of STAR WARS - Yes, they're cult. George Lucas shouldv'e stopped after making these ones; no computer animated special effects, no stupid pretty boy Anakin. Instead, the old movies grant us with super evil Darth Vader, plastic Yoda, confused Luke Skywalker, Leia with wierd hair, tons of super cool veichles AND Chewie!! These movies are great! *dies*
Cabaret - old movie again. Good cabaret movie with Liza Minelli and some really good song numbers.
Battle Royale - school uniforms and murder should be combined more frequently!
SUICIDE CLUB - sorry, but I just couldn't make a list without mentioning this movie: Are you connected to yourself?
Ping Pong - Yosuke Kubozuka as Peco does a great character, and this movie, whether you like ping pong or not, is just one that moves you!
Goodbye Lenin - german movie. Cool plot. German movie! XD
The Rocky Horror Picture Show - it's got transsexual transvestites and singing in it. We must all watch it right NOW!
Lilja 4-ever - Swedish movie by the only good film director we've got at the moment; it's about trafficking of prostitutes from Russia to Sweden, and it's a deeply tragic film. Great acting!

A warning: Don't watch this movie, or... watch it and prepare to become disgusted!
A Hole in my Heart - by the same Swedish director (Lukas Modysson) Actually, I wouldn't recommend this movie to anyone, so DON'T see it, it's shocking, horrible, sickening, terrible, tragic, and probably the most nauseous movie you'll ever see. And I'm not talking about horror. This isn't horror at all, but just four people, locked in an appartment, making an amateur porn film. The movie isn't at any point erotical, but instead shows four people who have reached the absolute bottom and have no respect for themselves anylonger. There are sickening scenes which include rape, forced eating, throwing up and... actually, I don't wanna talk about it. The movie will break both the characters and You down mentally. When it was first shown for the critics, more than half of the people in the room just walked out; the movie was to terrible for them to watch. But still, despite all this, it has gotten great response, and is considered somewhat a masterpiece. The acting is beyond words, it's just soo great. This is a very very special swedish movie!

Dangerous Liaisons - With John Malcovich and Glenn Close both doing a great job building up the arogant feel in the characters, and with amazing constumes and set in the 18th century, this is the best movie of it's kind!
The Commitments - good film , set in Ireland, about starting a band. IT's an entertaining movie, and the soundtrack is the best!

Whew.. can't think of anymore right now... but more will come! I just love movies! 😍 Movies = escapism, escapism = fun! 👍

Wow, you mentioned The Commitments... GREAT film btw. :) Some others I like include the recent School of Rock (friggin' hilarious and those dang kids ain't half bad), the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory with Gene Wilder (my FAV movie as a kid), Labyrinth and The Dark Crystal (great movies that fed my imagination as I was growing up), Swingers (contemporary masterpiece about a couple of Joe Schmoes), The Magnificent Seven (already mentioned by another member, the DEFINITIVE western), Dances With Wolves (such an epic tale and so beautifully shot, written, and acted... grand storytelling), plus a gajillion more... :)

swear this type of thread has been done before. Unless I'm dreaming about Jref in my sleep. To continue:

1. Blade Runner - My absolute fav film. Very stylised view of the future and looks like a live action anime film.

2. Battle Royale - Need I say more

3. Hero - Brilliant filming , especially with the different colours for each scene. A visually stunning film

4. Pulp Fiction - One of the few films that I kept going back to the cinema to see before it came out on video and then DVD. The best film QT has done.

5. Nikita - The original french film. I think it is one of the best french films I have seen. Unfortunatly some movie mogul in the US tried to ruin it by making that pile of rubbish with Bridgette Fonda called The Assassin

6. Life of Brian - Because it it so outragous. It deserves respect this film.

7. The Godfather I and II - Number three was not as good as these two

8. Sex Mission - A Polish film which I can't find the DVD for (help me someone)It is a bloody funny film about two men that wake up in the future to find that all men have died out and the world is populated by women.

9. Return of the Living Dead - I know it's corny and badly shot, but I still find it one of the funniest spoof horror films I know of.

10. Romeo and Juliet - The Baz Luhrman version. It shows how passionate and violent the play is.

This is subject to change, as there are films to be made, or released, or I haven't seen that might be better. Except for my Number one choice, that remains the same.
