Am I the only one tired of hearing J-girl, it just doesn't seem right to me.
Giving a nickname to a specific culture of women, almost like calling all japanese women kogals, maybe it's just me, And i slept on the floor so i didn't get up on the wrong side of the bed.

I have Japanese friends that are female and male and I don't refer top them as j-boys and j-girls. they are friends, and if I were to make reference to japanese woman me personally i would prefer say Japanese girl/woman "j-girl" just sounds trendy to me. :p

Do you guys say C-girls for chinese or A-girls for american what if they are from africa?

I hear ya. You raise a valid point but I don't think there is any negative connotation to it. Rather, I think it is more a term of convenience than anything else. It's much easier than having to type out "Japanese..." a gazillion times on these forums. Besides, the "J" connotation doesn't apply to just women but a wide variety of subjects (music, food, etc.,) In the the aftermarket tuning world for instance, the terms "JDM" (Japanese domestic market) and "J-Spec" are quite legitimate to use.

YesI understand that but for the most part the J-spec conotation refers to J_spec counter parts. But I see people post J-girl like 80 times in a thread when you only need to make a few references back. I should be/get used to it by now but I dunno i just seems cliche'

It IS cliche after being used 80 times in a row; would definitely give me the goose bumps fro sure. It would also begin to sound like a cliquish thing; when it's not, could even seem rather hostile to newcomers. My initial response was indeed negative, but when the light came on that it was only a convention and not a derrogatory term, I was fascinated by its novelty. I was even joyous to be able to use it in a very precise contxt that made 'j-girl' just perfect. Yet I agree with you that seeing it overly would make me a bit uncomfortable. I would expect after some time, the word could get worn out. More & more people would move away to another term created afresh. Ready for another, brand new cliche ? ;-)

Hi,
I was a bit doubtful about the term j-girl (and j-guy) when I first came across it (also j-people, which, I don't know why, makes me think of lego people or something... don't ask...). It just seemed a bit like seeing the people as a commodity, like j-rock or, well, other j-products, lol. I can see the way it saves typing out 'Japanese' every time, though, so... But it seems weird that it is just confined to 'gaijin referring to Japanese' and people don't use such an abbreviation to refer to Australian girls (for example). Personally, I don't like it when referring to people, so I always type it in full - but I use the term JBF; somehow that doesn't seem so negative because the whole thing is an abbreviation and obviously used to avoid typing the long phrase.

Feel free to refer to me as an E-girl... it has other associations... :D

Well, they use K-pop,C-pop,J-pop and the K,J,C in a lot of combinations with other words...but I think it's kinda stupid that everybody refers to J-girl,C-girl,K-girl out of lazyness.I hear ya on that one ☝

I'm kind of with IC on this one. It just makes things easier/more convenient, I guess. I do get tired of hearing it, though.

I certainly wouldn't call my husband a "j-guy", because what comes to my mind when I hear "j-guy", is some kind of trendily clad girly-guy with colored hair. I'll just use the entire "Japanese" for describing him when I have to.

I agree when typing you dont want to have to type out huge long words so every now and then I will use the term "j-girl" but I do not do it out of disrespect and whenever I have a conversation I will always say japanese girl/woman.

I know and understand the wanting to short hand somethings when typing but it doesn't seem to me that it gets used in that form more often it seems like it's cool tag name for something you want. like slang which I think is stupid to use for specifying a group of people. Maybe it's like Mizer said, I think mainly it seems a lil irritating b/c it pops up constantly like the "these girls are hot" threads. afterwhile I just want to unplug my monitor and drop it from my second floor window. it seems very much like trend usage.

I used to like the term "JDM" now it irritates me when I hear it. I used to like to talk about drifting, then it came to america and now all people can say is "drifting is cool it's all about getting sideways" I am not of fan of cliche' sayings but some gaijin sure do know how to jack up cool **** sometimes. It honestly has nothing to with just japanese references it could be any reference to any ethnicity/culture. It's fine as long as it isn't turned into some 'cool' thing to say.

I never heard the term J-girl or J-man until I started browsing Japanese forums last year. At first I thought it was kind of odd and unusual sounding, but I have become used to it and have even started using it in my posts as it is easier to type. I have even referred to my "J-wife" once or twice in a post or two. However, I do not find it derogatory in any way from most of the threads I have read on this forum. In conversation though, I will use the full word when referring to "J-people" ;-)

Japanese infatuations. Like I said from the responses to this thread it obvious I am just taking the terms too much in context but eh.

Well I guess we can let this one die. Are there any other terms you guys are sick of hearing when dealing with relations torwards the opposite sex?

I think it sounds weird too, like a fad or something kawaii. On reflection it's just another form of categorisation; would it really be that much better to say 'Japanese girl' ? Then one could argue that it's racist or even sexist. Why not just say 'girl' or 'woman', or 'person' for that matter. Of course it generally depends on the context and topic, but from what I have read here (which is not representative really since I only hang out in certain areas of the forum) the phrase is usually used in the context of "J-girls are this or that, J-girls do this or that bla bla bla"; so it wouldn't really matter if it was 'J-girls' or 'Japanese girls', since it's still generalisation.

I'm tired of the over-aggressive and sometimes offensive ways to describe a woman. If I hear my buddies say "Look at that tasty *****." or "She's a sweet piece of ***." one more time... Say it occasionally if you must, but not all the time.

If you see a pretty girl, is there something wrong with simply saying "Hey, she's cute" ?

I know this has nothing to do with Japan, but I'm sick of meeting white kids from the suburbs that use the word "Ghetto" every five seconds.

Not exactly the same but, it reminds me of a guy I know - he calls anyone of his friends "*******".. He will "greet" you with "hey *****" (no matter whether you are male of female) and if it's a group he'll say, "hey my *******" or something stupid like that. It's just really annoying.

abbreviations are cute, sometimes, true.

ever have seen a LCD display? the correct term is LC display, or LC monitor.

but people use to say LCD monitor, true?

japanese has the option to say otoninoni/onnanoni, if the matter is specific to girl/boy, like wearing lingerie/protective plastic device for martial arts.

otherwise, it is not always neccessary, except marriage, but it is not neccessary too, if talking about marriage within japan. because it is obvious, if talking about a "present person". of course, talking about "absent person", and it is not always obvious , but most likely.

me i am bored about all these "white guy looking for japanese girl". one thing is it excludes white girl looking for japanese guy, other thing is looking for same sex communication is very normal.

if i chat with a girl, it is called "heterosexual"? (and i use to, don't mind)
if i chat with a guy, i am ghey?

no. that's not true. now, today i tried to be neat, not only nice. true? :-)

O_o

Uhm....I have to admit I can't stand anybody who did not grow up in the hood to use the ghetto unless referring to something that is well ghetto. But that is neither here or there. Just a term I can't stand.

few pet peaves of mines right now are
DORI DORI when referring to drifting from people who don't even know how to fishtail let alone drift acar

hella (thats hella tight) I can't stand that word as it makes no damn sense to me but I am not form the west coast so pfft

J-girl "just kidding"

Azn I really hate that term it looks "ghetto" (Yo I am bLk fO rEalz Yo!)

My old roomate was from the West Coast and used to say that all the time. It didn't bother me until I heard myself say it once!

You should hear some of the stuff white kids (pretending to be black) in UK come out with

''Bust me a pound star!'' - often said to a complete stranger when wishing to 'borrow' a pound
