Elizabeth Van Kampen was in the Dutch East Indies when the Japanese invaded and she grew up through that occupation. Her first hand accounts of this corner of WWII were really golden and something that I miss, but she has her own website which is truly incredible.

I could say I miss Carrionman... who was banned along with me, but never unbanned, but he is sitting right next to me.

Ok, this might be a silly question, but aside from being banned how do you know someone is gone? Can you end your account or do you just stop posting? I know some people posted that they were no longer going to be around, but as for the rest I don't know...

Some of the people who are gone in 2006 were the reason that I joined JREF.

He's online and very active. I bump into him on a daily basis. I've known Paul for years, from two usenet groups, the thankfully now defunct Maktos.com, JREF, and a forum where he is currently very active. Actually, it was a mention of JREF by Paul on usenet that got me started posting here.

The ones that bug me are the ones I have E-Mails for and talk to often; then without any reason I can think of, just dissapear. Mimmy_08 for example, very active and a close friend/pen pal , just gone. I worry something bad has happened, but have no way to ever find out; kind of leaves you hanging.

So many names, so many bells that ring, so many memories of bits and pieces of good times, intense times, and some times that perhaps could be said to have best not been. It's all great, when one looks back at it. I guess we still have our community in some form of another.

THE NAME highlighted in the above list, I am kind of keeping contact with...more of less...by e-mail. She seems to be the same old Kara_Nari as ever, but--for better or for worse--she did once mention that she had become, at one point, a little tired of some of the bickering that had been going on over some things here (and it wasn't the 'Serious Discussion' area of early 2006 and before, either) B U T ......that's the way the cookie crumbles !!

Me, I've been on Mars for a short vacation (actually had to some work on my string mirrow projecting unit) and we all know how long it takes to get there and back...even using that darn unit, which seems to be acting up these past two months. Maybe I've got it fixed now, but may have to return, one more time to get it totally up and running...hee, hee, hee....

I MISS my dear sis, Tsuyoiko...though I know she's still hanging 'round in the shadows. AND OF COURSE I HAVE MISSED YOU ALL WHO ARE HERE WHILE I WAS ON MARS !!!!

The first three stopped posting a few months after moving out of Japan, and I can understand that as I have myself progressively felt less inclined and stimulated to post about Japan since I left. The other 4 don't live in Japan at all, so it is all the more understandable, although it is not necessarily discussions about Japan that I miss most with them, but various serious discussions...

I will also add Yimija, who only stayed a few months on JREF between March and November 2004, but whom I recognised as a rare pearl. I was shocked and saddened at hearing from Frank that she had passed away.

I miss the good old times of the first 2 years of the JREF Forum, when we could still have serious discussion with Thomas and Kirei_na_me, as well as the above-mentioned. It will remain as the apogee of the forum in my heart.

I am saddened that a handful of members (that I won't cite) have managed to sour and spoil any serious discussion on JREF and bring the intellectual of discussions to new abysses. They have managed to make me more aggressive and irritable that I should ever have been, and I apologise for that to other members who have had to endure it. It was only a reflection of my own frustration at not being able to have the same level of discussion as JREF once enjoyed before these newer members joined and stayed... Some fortunately have left, but enough have remained for me to feel uncomfortable posting here.

As I have no visceral need to post about Japan anymore, not being exposed to daily situation that would urge me to share my feelings and see what other thought of it, I have no reason to stay in a place that now gives me more stress and annoyance than enjoyment and fulfilment. Respectable members are still welcome to discuss serious topics with me on the Eupedia Forum (not just Europe-related), but this time I won't allow anyone to sabotage the quality of the discussion I wish to maintain in some categories. I far prefer a smaller discussion group of valuable and knowlegeable members than the jungle this forum has become.

Even though we have sparred on a few occasions and may not have seen eye to eye on some topics, I don't think JREF would be where it is today without your input into not only the forum, but other areas of the site as well. I have been around since 2004, and believe there have been many ups and downs. I noticed a definite change in your behavior and deterioration of your judgement almost exactly one year ago. It was then I saw a rather vindictive streak that I could have lived without.

I would remind you that no one can make you do or say anything that you don't want to, and that the character you manifest is entirely your responsibility and under your control. Since many of those you tangled with left "(many people have left the forum hurt because I couldn't bear that I used their own insults against them !)" I would suggest that the change in the tenor in the forum was due to intentions to shape the expression and opinions expressed here... and the loss of several calmer and intelligent voices can be traced directly to this period and the atmosphere you helped to create.

I will miss the Maciamo that posted beautiful pictures of Japan and shared his wonder and fresh observations of Japan back in 2004 and 2005. I will miss the intelligence, joy, and insights of someone with a sincere appreciation for new people and experience. I hope you and your forum over there do well and that you find peace, joy, and tolerance.

Isn't it sad that people get driven away like this i myself have found that the joy of being on JRef has been riped apart by peoples steryotypes and opinions about others intelligence becouse they have a little fun.

I found that everytime i came here i got more and more angry until i thought i would find myself being mean and geting in arguments which is nowhere near my nature so i keep away
