Not at all, I usually listen to the song then find the translation and I'm not disapointed ^_^ There is nothing wrong with doing that.

personally.. i think jpop sounds better than american pop?? and plus its not the music i hear everyday in the US... You could go to a foreign country like Japan and ask this same question to those who listen to American music but don't know a lick of English. I remember being very young and watching Japanese people sing to songs like Billie Jean(or atleast sing the chorus), and ask myself why do they love these songs so much when they probably don't understand it? Now, I can say that I'm in their positions, and from my experiences, you don't need to know the lyrics to enjoy a song. You don't have to understand what they're saying to feel the soul and emotion that the artist puts behind what they sing. If the beat moves you, if the hook is still stuck in your head, or if you're just feelin what you're hearing, it won't even matter what language it's in. That's how I feel when I listen to songs like Hikaru Utada, Ayumi H., or listen to Ken Hirai, or even M-flo. If the music and the vocals are good, then I don't see why I shouldn't listen to it.

I listen to a lot of different Japanese artists. When I really want to know what they're saying (I can't really translate), I either find the translated lyrics or I'll pick a song apart, line by line. I listened to Gackt's 'Hoshi no Suna' a while ago, and a friend told me the song was full of sadness. Not just because of the tone of the song, but also the lyrics. So, since I really wanted to know what they meant, I used a translation program (not Babelfish! Babelfish sucks!) and started translating. I have the paper around here somewhere.
The main point is if you really want to know what they're saying, you'll find a way. Otherwise, It's just good music and there's no reason not to listen to it.

Melodies and lyrics
Hello everybody.
I understand the meaning of the lyrics, and I think they're quite important for a song. I listened to many Jpop singers and Gackt is my favourite. That's most of the things because of his lyrics. They're such totally beauty nice lyrics. I think melodies are important too, but when I like a song, it's more because of its lyrics when I like a song. And I think when they write something in English, it is great, many times singers do it because maybe with English sounds more 'cool', and too many times they get it, but in a Japanese song, I think mixing pretty sounds and meanings in other languages like English or French can be cute, art. Right that sometimes singers haven't a 'good English' but... c'est la vie...

Finally someone who agrees with me... Although I don't agree with the linguisitic mix-and-match...
But, if anything, a lot of the post on this thread have proved the age old saying that ignorance is bliss (as someone in an earlier post clearly said that he/she doesn't like North American music mainly because of the lyrics...). And I say this without wanting to offend anyone, by the way, I'm just stating a fact...

Hai, though I'm afarid it works both ways one that. When I went to japan my japanese host mother didn;t know ANY english and yet she was a HUGE carpenters fan, sang along and had many albums of thier music. I ask any Japanese person who's english isn't so hot, why they prefer western music as apposted to there own.
You know an old saying just popped into my head, "The grass is always greener on the other side". I think it has somthing to do with what your used to as apposted to somthing different and somewhat mysterious aswell. And I personally hunt for lyrics translations of my favorite songs, hence why I don't really like Dir En Grey even though SO many people do (esp american girls) becuse they're lyrics are very...well Gross alot of them.

I don't think it really matters that much if you don't understand every bit of a song as long as you like it and how it sounds. Surprisingly... I start to memorize the lyrics even though i don't really know what it means. But I enjoy listening to J-ROck or J-PoP even though I don't understand most of it.

I'M NOT ALONE! lol I love Dir En Grey. I honestly do. The music is great....but the lyrics are questionable. I definately agree. Some of their lyrics are gross and if not gross disturbing or both. When I listen to Dir en Grey I always look up the translation first to decide whether I really want to listen to it or not b/c I know how their lyircs tend to be.

Lol, I think I should look at some of these lyrics.
The main thing I look for in a song is if it has a good melody. Usually if it does, it is a good song to me.
I do not understand most of the jpop songs I listen to, but I am getting better at searching for translated lyrics on the internet lately, and the lyrics are usually suprisingly good, so it makes me like the music even more.

the first thing we hear from the song is the melody right....?? if it have good melody and fit to us, we will enjoy the song right....?? so although it have very nice melancholist lyrics....we cannot enjoy the music if it doesnt have harmonic sound and melody.....
