I think I've written about it before here. The first time I went to Japan, I stayed in a friend's house for about a week. It was great, except that my friend had cats, and I'm allergic to them. I think it was on the third day when my asthma got so bad that I had to go to the hospital in order to breathe again. Luckily my friend's mom was a nurse at a large local hospital, so we got it resolved pretty smoothly. My friend's mom really saved the day, as I didn't speak more than a couple of phrases of Japanese at the time.
Some good things from that experience:
I learned how to say asthma in Japanese ( 喘息 ぜんそく zensoku)
My friend established how to write my family name in katakana.
