Hello,
I've been working on translating a propaganda leaflet that has a line of poetry that is giving me some trouble.
「死なずとも、よかる汨羅に、身をすてゝへん屈原の、名をのこしけり」Its based off of Qu Wuan's "death" poem for context. Admittedly poetry is really pushing the limits of my translation ability let alone old poetry. It's been fun learning though, apparently けり is a form of past tense in poetry? The leaflet then goes on to talk about Kyōka poetry as well. I swear its probably the fanciest propaganda leaflet in existence. Anyways if someone could help me out in translating it I'd be grateful. English or just "normal" Japanese would be great haha. (If you need more context here's a link to a transcript from Waseda's media lab, 20世紀メディア研究所 戦時宣伝ビラ・データベース)

How much have you gotten so far? You got the bits up until the poem?

Edit: You understand this poem itself is a Kyōka, and not Qu Yuan's own death poem? It ties in the with last line of the second side.

Just the poem bit is the part where I'm unsure of my translation. Yeah the backside of the leaflet talks about it being a Kyoka so I figured it was a kyoka satire of the original poem.

This is how I would translate it

Though the death was pointless, Qu Yuan threw himself in the Miluo, and left his legacy

Though translating Bekira to Miluo doesn't do justice to the euphony of Bekira/Biruma

Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to help me out. I hadn't even realized the connection between Bekira/Biruma! A good reminder of the path ahead for my translating ability. Luckily for me at least, I've only found a couple other leaflets that use poetry. Those use famous waka poems so I've found translations in poetry books.
