Do anime opening themes (or closing songs for that matter) go with the show?

Does your favorite anime have some cheesy pop (love) song as the opening theme even though it seemingly has nothing to do with the show what so ever?

If so list the show here.



Most recently I started watching "Mushishi" on youtube and have watched about 7 episodes so far.
The theme song is in English and has lyrics about walking 10,000 miles to be with you. The main character wanders around the country side going village to village to help people that have been infected with Mushi, virus like spirits of some sort. Beyond him walking around the country side, the show hardly has anything to do with the theme song - yet.
 
you are (partially) right about mushishi.. lyrics do not quite match with show, but melody (in my opinion) is almost perfect.
If song is not particularly written for show, most likely it will not be so perfect. But, in other hand, ending song for Ergo Proxy (radiohead - paranoid android) goes just perfectly...

I'm not big fan of Blood+ songs... i use to fast forward that part of show. is not that they are not good for show, but songs are just a bit boring to me.
 
In truth this used to bother me a lot, (prePokemon).
Nowadays I really don't care that much, almost always have listened to the songs all the way through anyway (unless each episode had the openings before it), but still felt compelled to make this thread.

Actually, I was about to add that I kind of like the intro to Mushishi.
However, I am glad it is not played on the radio every 2-4 hours like many pop radio stations do to really popular songs around where I live.


Another SONG/ANIME that does not seem to fit is Ghost in the Shell SAC.
GitS is one of my all time favorite since the first movie (mid90s) and see it as more than just an "action" show, yet still I am not a fan of the intro to this show.

....now that I think about it, maybe its a matter of getting used to Japanese taste.

Neon Genesis Evangelion

The show is quite dramatic and tense at times,
but the intro, at least the music, is quite the opposite.

I'm not trying to knock Evangelion as a show,
just stating that is different from what I might be used to in the States.
If this show originated in the states, the theme music would have been more tense. I mean, Evangelion has tense action, as well as many tense moments for the characters.
 
well the opening songs of X-Samurai(Rouroni Kenshin) does relly fits with the anime.

and another example the Easy Listening/Chill music of Samurai Champloo is great!

There are anime where the opening song doesnt fit and you have other where it actually well fit's
 
I didn't want to start a new thread for this so...,
MACROSS,
what came to the US as Robotech, the first generation,
throughout had some pretty corny songs sung by Minmei,
including the one called "We Will Win".
I've read it describe it as having a "patriotic" feel to it.
Yes, and it is quite hokey.
I've heard the Japanese Macross Minmei songs are much better.

The song in the first 25 seconds of this documentary about war reminded me of this song.
I hope it entertains

You forgot a few versions

A version by Korean/Japanese singer Ayumi. Caused some hilarity amongst some people because it seems to sing "Tashiro Tashiro Tashiro, tyanto boumei shiro!" which roughly translates to "Tashiro, please die!". (Tashiro is a Japanese comedian) It appears to be nothing but a coincidence because it's sung in Korean.

Animetal Lady's version. This excellent band recorded a version with Pink Lady's MIE back in 1997.

And here's some version with a comedian from the Morisanchyuu group. I laughed my *** off the first time I saw it. Hilarious.
 
From Inuyasha, there is one song that doesn't go quite well with the timing of all the episodes. If you have heard Itazurana Kiss first, you would think it was a cute song. However, playing it directly after Kikyo has died (though I enjoy it) does not really go quite well.
 

In this case, even if the opening song doesn't really fit the general environment of the series, it's such a suitable song! If you read the lyrics, you'll see that it's as if it was writen for Shinji Ikari. It's suits him and his situation and his personal conflicts very well!
