Right not 100% if this should be here but it does seem a relatively decent place to post it.

I am well a Computer Games Programming Undergraduate, who has a passion for Japan (yes obvious I know or I would not be here really would I).

I am currently trying to learn Japanese and well Its hard but with help from my girlfriend and other friends I am slowly *emphasis on slowly* getting a bit better. Now I always work on the theory you learn more when your having fun doing so, so I was thinking of throwing a few ideas about to program a game in which you learn Japanese.

Now I have my ideas but I really more than anything want the communities ideas, I mean I am sure theres a treasure trove of ideas you could all bounce around. From storyline to how it would play to the type of game right down to should it be 3D or 2D.

I will be programming it in my spare time so don't expect the next best seller in a few weeks as I will be doing it solo (unless anybody here can program in the chosen language or can do 3d or 2d modeling).

My original idea was to have it as an adventure in Japan and it all starts when you fly into Narita Airport. You have to get items complete quests using your knowledge of Japanese. Also there would be settings to learn Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji as a bonus.

Please add your ideas as when finished I will give complete rights to all those that helped and release it free of charge for all to use. Even for you already fluent, might be fun to play :-)

Sometimes, Zaff, it's really hard to feel and reason the correctness of a particular thread's being in the more correct location. As far as I can feel and reason, this location is fine since it's directed towards the community and since it could be a little public-sensitive--such as the songs I composed and had linked to on the 'listen to my audio-blog' thread. Another team may not agree, and it may be moved, but for now...it's here.

It sounds like an interesting idea, and I can kind of imagine what it would be like. Yes, I fully agree that the brain usually makes an effort to set firing patterns to record happy moments and such firing patterns can tend to draw out creativity and/or enhance learning under the usage of those connections.

I am not a gamer, and cannot help at the moment, but as a teach may come up with some themes of learning that you could use. I hope some will join in and give you some ideas.

Please do keep on studying and improving with your Japanese !! MM

Zaff, this sounds like a great idea! Anything that makes learning (of anything) fun is good! :-)

Your idea reminds me of a game we played in primary school, which if we looked at it now would look so antiquated, but the idea was the same. It was an adventure where you had to save your Grandma, can't remember the specifics but that the graphics were really simple and the game involved lots of quizzes like spelling etc.

As for ideas, I'm not a gamer either so a bit short on those, but an adventure around Japan sounds good - navigating Japan in itself could be an adventure!
