Need a word or phrase translated?

Yeah, it would be ぐいぐい来ております, but wmmm, how to translate this?😌

I think 来る here is something like "feel" or "affect".

as in あの映画、とてもよかったですね。 ぐっと来ました。

What do you think?

So, the guy is dancing when he says this? How about "Oh, yeah! I'm feeling it! Uh huh!" ?
:D

あまりに良すぎて

あまり means not very much
すぎ means too much

When you put them together, which meaning am I suppose to take?

あまりに良すぎて

when you put them together, which meaning am i suppose to take?

あまり and あまりに are different.
あまりに means "very" or "way too ______".

So the combination of あまりに and すぎ makes emphasis.

あまりに良すぎて
あまり means not very much
すぎ means too much
When you put them together, which meaning am I suppose to take?

Think of あまり(に) / あんまり(に) as "excessively".

As an adverb, as in this case, it has two possible meanings.

1.
excessively
ワラカワちゃんが作ったケーキ、あんまりおいしかったからお店で買ってきたのかと思った!
The cake Warakawa-chan had made, it was sooo delish I thought it was store-bought!
2.
not very much
ワラカワちゃんが作ったこのケーキ....あまりおいしくない...ね。
This cake that Warakawa-chan has made..... isn't very good, is it?

When used as "excessively", as in the first example as well as in the one you gave, it is followed by the consequences of it being excessively so and so. So, あまりに良過ぎて should be followed by something like 信じられない、びっくりした、etc.

In the following examples, A and B belong to the category 1 while C belongs to the category 2. Also, when used as "not very much", it usually does not take に.

A.「新しいトランスフォーマーの映画見た? あまりに良過ぎて、もう一回見たくなっちゃった。」
Have you guys seen the new Transformer movie!? It was SOOOO good I want to watch it again!

B.「見たよ。 あんまりひどかったから、途中で映画館出ちゃった。」
Seen it. It was so bad I walked out.

C.「私も見たけど、あまり面白くなかった。」
I've seen it, too. I didn't think it was very interesting.

OK, that is my take on it. Now, let's wait for someone who really knows the grammar.... lol

Are you serious?
Amari and amarini means opposite things? That's so lame and confusing!
Did you think about it ? Amari = remainder, remnents, left over. Something taken out and looked at from which perspective ? A excess of surplus in accumulation; as we have a debit situation, not enough on balance.

Amari is likewise used occasionally as "more than, over" with a positive verb btw. So forget the strictly opposites theory. 🙂:

「あまり」の検索結果 - Yahoo!辞書

In conclusion
あまり/あんまり/あまりに/あまりの/あまりな: very, too
あまり/あんまり~ない: not very

あまりに良い/あまり(に)良すぎる: too good
あまり良くない: not very good

As you can see, this is quite same as "very" vs "not very" in English.
FYI, as for あまりに良くない, あまりに emphasizes 良くない. Thus, it means "very not good" or "too bad."

Although we wouldn't particularly use "very" in the sense of excessively or more than enough. The difference in English, I think, corresponds closer to "not much" (of a given state, quantity, etc) v. "too much" of the same. (あまりに、あまりにも。。。)

Ahh fair enough, so its usage is just like もう and また, their meaning changes from one meaning to the opposite meaning depends on the negativity of the following word(s)?

Is this correct?

Q1. [Many people like cats]

[おおくの ひとびとは ねこが すきです.]

Q2. [Cats have fluffy fur]

[ねこは ふわっとしたの けがわが あります.]
or is it?
[ふわふわした] for the fluffy part?

Q3. How do you say...[many people like cats because they are cute]?

Is it?

[おおくの ひとびとは ねこが すき, だってねこはかわいいです.]

Q4. [Cats like to drink milk]

[ねこは ミ ルクをのむのがが すきです.]

As for あまり, yes. But あまりに would be more common for "too much" in most cases. あまり as the meaning "too much" tends to be used when sentence continues, not sentence end, as in the example I quoted from a dictionary.

あまり食べると(体に)毒だよ。
あまり急ぎすぎて失敗しないようにね。
昨日の試験はあまりに難し過ぎた。

ねこは、けがふわふわです。
ねこには、けがふわふわしている。

Thought through a bunch of possible alternatives earlier....but these is the only ones making sense now (and maybe not even...). Early after dinner nap session to the rescue ! :D

ところで、ミルクががすきですけど。。。。たいていのねこには、あまりしょうかできないですね。

ネコちゃんにミルクをやらないほうがいいです。。。😌
私も猫が大好きだからね!🙂

Hello,

There is a Buddhist concept "Here and Now", which, is short, means that people should less pass their time in thinking about past or future, but rather be more aware of what happens right now. I'd like to know how "Here and Now" is in Japanese.

Thanks in advance!

I'm not a believer in Buddhism at all. But probably いま、ここで(に) or some such, no? :-)

開ける (ひらける) vi >>>> 開く (ひらく) vt

開く (あく) vi >>>>>> 開ける (あける) vt

Can the Japanese make a simple verb any more complicated?

開ける (ひらける) vi >>>> 開く (ひらく) vt
開く (あく) vi >>>>>> 開ける (あける) vt

とにかく、自動詞としては、「ひらける」があまり使われていないと思いけど。。。

大した慰めにならない?? :p

Does anyone know what this means:

見た目にそぐわない

I know what 見た目 and そぐわない mean individually but I'm baffled at what its trying to say.

What's your translation of each word?

Something does not fit/match the appearance.
e.g.
見た目にそぐわない大胆さ boldness which does not match its/his appearance (implying it/he looks timid).

Oh, I didn't realize this part. So it could be a coincidental incompatibility between looks and behavior or actions. There isn't necessarily an attempt to deceive (外見にだまされる)。Thanks undrentide-san ! :-)

しかも、こうした競争に参加できるのはmba (経営学修士)という、企業の経営、財務、人事管理などに関する教育を専門的に受けたごく一部の人々に限られています。

「ごく」 と言う言葉の意味は何でしょうか? お願いします。

このシステムですと、入社した時点で誰でもトップになる可能性があるわけですが、昇進の際には減点主義による選別が行われがちなんですね。

「行われがちなんです」 ?

Hello everyone

Would someone be able to translate the following passage for me?

私が神宮寺さんの事を尋ねた帝都テレビの友人に電話したところ私が神宮寺さんを捜していることすら漏らしていないと言っていました。

The scenario is that person A (私) is speaking to a person named Jinguuji.
Now what I am a little confused about is the part highlighted in bold. Is the speaker saying either

a) I contacted a friend at Teito television who I asked about you

or does it mean

b) I contacted a friend at Teito television who asked about you

The confusing bit is WHO asked about Jinguuji. Would anyone be able to clear this up for me?

I've been thinking about this passage for quite some time.

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

私が神宮寺さんの事を尋ねた帝都テレビの友人に電話したところ
私が神宮寺さんを捜していることすら漏らしていないと言っていました。

Core of this sentence is
(私が)友人に電話したところ、(その友人は)~と言っていました。

私が神宮寺さんの事を尋ねた
帝都テレビの
Both modify 友人

So (a) is correct as interpretation of the above sentence.

I called a friend at Teito TV whom I've asked about you (= Jinguji san),
but he said that he did not even mention (to the third party) that I was looking for you.
