One of the examples of this expression that I saw was: 今にも増して寂しがり屋でした, where 寂しがり屋 ("lonely person") is a noun. So the translation would be something like "He was (used to be?) lonelier than he is now", right?

Yeah, indeed, 寂しがり屋 is a noun. That's an exception. 寂しがり屋 means more likely "a person who feels lonliness easily/who always wants to be with company" than "a lonely person". The present state(どれだけ寂しがり屋か: how easily/frequently he feels loneliness) can be compared to the past state(how easily/frequently he felt it,) as same as 努力家, 勉強家, 反抗期... So you can't say, for instance, 今にも増して寂しさ/努力/勉強/反抗でした.

This expression connotes that the present state is enough XYZ.
（今も一生懸命勉強しているけど、）高校の頃は今にも増して日本語を勉強していました。
(Now I'm studying Japanese enough hard, but) I was studying Japanese in high school more hard than now.

Simply putting, there are only two nouns for siblings, 兄弟 /kyoudai/ for male siblings and 姉妹 /simai/ for female siblings.
But you sometimes want to talk or write about male-female or female-male siblings etc. In such cases, we write 兄妹 or 姉弟 in writing, but pronounce /kyoudai/ for both.

もん is a changed form of もの(物). ～したものだから is used when you explain the reason for something. ちょっと変わった虫がいたものだから means "because there's a bit strange insect, so...".

3. I think, you could find 上申/zyoushin/ in a larger dictionary. 上申する means to report to someone in a higher position than you.

No, 必ず is one word.

According to dictionaries, it originally came from a phrase 仮ならず and here ず is auxiliary verb meaning negation in Old Japanese. But today 必ず is one word and neither 必 or ず do not stand alone.
