I have a suspicion, though, that かかる is 懸かる in this sentence. The order is correct and one translation would be "The trap that the crane was caught in (had fallen into ?) was taken." ?

Also, the て form totte is from 取る, right ?

I have a suspicion, though, that かかる is 懸かる in this sentence.

When talking about traps, you can use either 掛かる or 懸かる.
I don't think it changes the meaning.

Its about a ski jumper (if it is called that way in English) who got into an accident and than the above sentence follows...

My guess is, that he got punished for the accident by not letting him participate in any competitions?!

It's not 年よるい it's 年より and 年より doesn't mean 'from year.

つづら is a square shaped container to keep clothes made of vine called tsuzurafuji (something similar to rattan), they were used in old time.
It was usually plastered with paper and painted with Japanese lacquer (urushi).
Often it has harness so that one can bring it on one's back.

つづら is not commonly used nowadays, but many know about it because of folk story such as 舌切り雀（したきりすずめ）.

Yeah, that's what I would assume too. I'd just never seen it used before in reference to animals. I guess I was wondering where these sometimes mangled sentences were coming from.

Yes it is from a story, and わ means circle there. Mice form a circle around the greedy obaasan. It is a famous story indeed, but i couldn't recall its name now.

Due to the lack of kanji here (or if there is one) for "たいして" I'm not quite clear on the meaning of this.

"When becoming an adult, there is a responsibility to "something" for society."

Anyone have any ideas?
