Justine, great job!
Hope you will keep translating Japanese tales. You know "aozora bunko" like Project Gutenberg, right?
青空文庫 Aozora Bunko

Pipokun,

No, I wasn't aware of that site at all! It looks great; thank you very much for pointing me to it. :) :)

I will definitely continue doing this kind of translation. By any chance, did you find any mistakes in the one I've already posted?

Thanks again. :)

自分にぴたりのクルマをみつけたい!
I want to find a car by m yself.
Does this seem correct. I am reading the Car Lot pamphlet I picked up from Japan and was trying to translate some of the simple stuff.

That isn't ひとり, it's ぴたり, which means "exact" here. So the sentence means something like "I want to find the perfect car for me."

I'm having a hard time with って。 You know, when placed on it's own after a noun or something.. I know how to use it when adding it as a verb tence.. eg: 行って、持ってって but not on it own, what does it mean? I've seen it as a question and not.

りかさんって。。。
恋愛ってなに?

etc. It's -te form of いる right? ><;

Check out this post on the usages of って.

Just a typo in the 7th paragraph,
これを聞いたユキが「何があったんですか。離してください」と言いました。
離してください=>話してください

I'm wondering how you interpret her mind leaving her home for the sake of her child.

I'll give it another check. But I can't find the exact meaning of these three words anywhere :( I can understand what 演じている must mean, it's just that I've never seen it in form of a verb before.
I'm not sure if this ever got worked out or not, but 演じている is fine as a verb, (you could also use やっている with the same meaning); 荒んでいる is read
すさんでいってる basically that something is deteriorating or losing power. The other two should be available in any decent dictionary. 😌

Oops, thanks for that. :) I've fixed the typo.

I didn't mean to say that she left home for the sake of her child/children. I guess it's not very clear, the way I wrote it in English. I only thought that, for the children's sake, she would not kill him. Here's how I interpreted it literally:

子供のために、命はとらない
For the sake of the child(ren), I will not take your life.

けれど、私はもうここには居られない
However, I am not able to be here anymore.

Does this seem right to you?
Thanks again :)

We played Badminton, Frisbee, and Waterguns.
Everyone was very crazy, we had a lot of fun!

Also this one is sort of "how are you," but more like is your work going smoothly ? 順調ですか? He he....my friends never ask how I'm doing either. :p

I'm having trouble figuring out how to say something along the lines of "love flickers and it's life repeats again"

恋はちらちらしてその命が繰り返した

.. is what I got so far, but it sounds wrong. Can you correct it for me? Preferably using as many of those words as possible, and as few changes to keep the intended meaning, ne. thanks!!

恋は移ろい∥また桂り返す|
恋は裏腹∥桂り返し|

文字化けしてたので、、、
恋は移ろい、また繰り返す。
恋は裏腹、繰り返し。

Are there any particular vocabulary here you have questions about?

So what is the use of とは/って? (here are random generated examples)

「There is a tide」とはどういう意味ですか
1メートルは1ヤードとは完全に同等ではない
「暗黒の王子」とは「悪魔」のことです

What is the meaning, how do you us eit and what for? ^^ Thank you

So what is the use of とは/って?

the difference とは/って is written or formal/conversational

I suppose とは is the particle mainly having following meanings:
1. definition: Aとは、Bです。

This part of the passage and how it relates to the guy's arrest is a little confusing to me. I understand it details the actual incident, that he passed through a man and woman on the street, was ordered to halt, suddenly brandished a knife and stabbed him (in the stomach). He apparently forced his way between them and was asked to stop, by the police or victims, before actually doing anything. But why is it included in the part on his arrest and not in the first sentence where the story begins ? Is this because it is testimony of the victim and wasn't known by the police until their investigation ? :?

You can find two news in one article.

A crazy guy stabbed the innocent
The police shooting

I don't know how many times J police shoot every year, but it must be much less than in your country. So once J police fire guns even with good reasons, it turns to be big news.

I'm sure that is true, you can even see guns visible on the outer clothing of a policeman in the US. Plus this story happened in Kamitakaido where my good friends live which was my interest in it, fortunately they were on vacation at the time. 😌

But I still can't smoothly translate the below sentence. Is it saying the guy who lives near the scene of the crime was arrested for passing between a man and woman from behind, behind called to halt, suddenly pulling a knife and stabbing.

逮捕されたのは、現場近くに住む野口隆司容疑者(39 歳)で、歩いていた男女2人の後ろから間を割って通り 過ぎたため、呼び止められ、突然持っていたナイフで刺 したということです。

A: the suspect
B: the victim, couple
I imagine the situation...
Just after A past the couple with A's intention to cause some troubles,
"hey what the hell are you doing?", B said.
"hey what are you talking about?", A said.
During the heated quarrel started, suddenly A stabbed B without any reasons and ran away.
I'm afraid that the people turn more and more frustrated.

A bit off topic, but now I am into Edo culture.
Some say that Edo was 3 times more dense city than present Tokyo. Edo people knew good tips how to survive the terribly packed city life. The tips were called 江戸しぐさ. It is very interesting.
