Need a Japanese Name

Hello jref.com! I am new here. I came so I can learn Japanese words and phrases for a short story I am writing that takes place in Japan in the near future. I would like my male protagonist to have a Japanese name that means "strong" or "brave" or something along those lines. I try to use translators online but they give me japanese characters that I cannot read and not phonetically spelled words. Can anyone help?

How about 勇人, "brave/heroic person". There are multiple possible pronunciations for this name: Isato (male only), Hayato (gender-neutral), Yuuto (gender-neutral) etc., so you can pick one.

Other options include 勇美 "brave/beautiful" (Isayoshi), 一勇 "one/brave" (Ichiyuu), 勝勇 "win/brave" (Katsutoshi) and so on.

These are first names; there are also family names that include the 勇 character if you're looking for those.

I've never seen a woman whose name is Hayato or Yūto/Yuuto, or a person whose name is Ichiyū/Ichiyuu....

How about 勇[Isamu], 剛[Tsuyoshi] or 猛[Takeshi]?
Notice that the meaning is provided by the kanji, not the pronunciation. For instance, a character 勲 has the same reading Isamu, but it means achievement/meritorious deeds/service.

Then I probably misinterpreted Jisho's "gender not specified" annotation. I thought this meant "gender-neutral", though I suppose what it really means is "we don't know what the gender is"...

I would use a name-ranking site (e.g. 明治安田生命 | 名前ランキング2014 ) if you wanted to look up names that are reasonably common (they do a top ten by year which is interesting).
