Well I was watching the simpsons today, in english. And I found what has to be my favorite episode yet. Homer Simpson discovers japanese dishwashing soap with his image on it, in katakana. I've written some notes on what happened, part of the episode was even in japanese! I would love to buy the episode, but its not on DVD yet. Here's the description:
In Marge We Trust"
822 4F18
Original Airdate: 4/27/97

Marge becomes a big hit with the Springfield Community Church parishioners when she begins dispensing her homespun advice. The church sets up a hotline that people can call to talk with Marge about their problems. Meanwhile, while digging for goodies at the garbage dump, Homer finds a box of Japanese dishwashing detergent called Mr. Sparkle with a picture of his face on it. After some investigation, Homer discovers that Mr. Sparkle is a huge brand name in Japan and that his likeness serves as their logo. Back at the church, Reverend Lovejoy is depressed because everyone is consulting Marge and not him. Even Ned Flanders asks Marge for help, but when Marge can't offer Ned any useful advice, Lovejoy intervenes and proves that he is best man for the job.
Guest Star: Sab Shimono as Mr. Sparkle (whos this?)

Someone tells homer simpson that the dish washer stuff is from japan and from the sacred forest of Hokaido (anyone know where this is?). He called this area of japan and they answered the phone with "Moshi moshi" ( I guess this means hello? anyone know) and I remember him sayng hanashimasu (Dont know what this is either) and "diyo", they even said o sama. It turned out to be a coincidence in the end, the image of homer on it was based off of a fish market. He then goes to the library and asks for a book on hokaido japan, for a phone book there. The clerk asks him if its local, and he says yes. Then he calls them and and they send him a information video cassett. Not sure how he could've played the video cassett because of region codes? But it worked. It was in japanese with english subtitles. It was hilarious, with some bad english.

I highly recommend this episode if anyone watches the simpsons. Its my favorite! PS: I think I remember seeing Mr.Sparkle in earlier episodes as well.. hmm
also other japanese products. The episode before this featured the yakuza, japanese mafia? Is there such a thing?

Arigato gozaimasu

I remember when I was a kid I got some old LP records from Japan. I was so bummed out my phonograph wasn't region-free and I couldn't listen to them.

I also got some pornography but I couldn't find a pornograph to play them on so I had to throw them away.

I am sooo stealing that line.

Im not going to blatantly lie and say ive never seen a pornographic movie, i remember when i first saw a japanese one, i was actually shocked how the japanese chicked seemed to yelp in discomfort rather then pleasure :S.

Ahwell, most teenage lads dabbled in porn. 😌

Then they get a steady girlfriend, and get to star in their own private two person audiance live action version.

👍

That's a good line Mike Cash! :giggle: Reminds me of my A-level French tutor who played us some song called "la pornographe de la phonographe". He really listened to it with relish, but none of the rest of us could understand a word.

I think the problem lied with the title. It should have made some interesting sounds the other way. "The Phonography of the Pornography."

Lexico.... you are so right! *leaps up from desk* You've just given me an idea for a song! I'm at work, dammit - I want my guitar! *drums heels* :D

McTojo missed his vocation. When I become a famous musician, I will seek him out for lyrics collaboration. That's a born songwriter..... :-)

You'll have to have a note book next to your desk for any lyrics that come into your head.

GoldCoinLover, maybe you've realized by now, but although region codes are indeed a fact of life for DVDs, video cassettes work somewhat differently. You can play any Japanese video cassette on any US VCR granted that they are both VHS or both beta.
