MEXT Scholarship (Graduate Students) 2017

hello every1, great comments and just what i need.
i am graduate of Industrial Mathematics from one of the university in Nigeria.i hv a challenge in sorting out schools that offer mathematical science in japan as i would love to carry out my research in mathematical modelling of viral diseases.pls can someone help me

I have also been wondering about the wording on the placement form... I was thinking of adding a note to say that the profs have said they'd work with me but I haven't formally applied for admission yet. But if anyone has better ideas I'd like to hear them.

Look at research papers on the subject you're interested in and find out who wrote them, that's a good start.
 
@madphysicist I was thinking of adding something similar as for my 1st option im 90% guaranteed to be accepted ......hopefully someone here has a good idea on what to do

Hi this might help try the JASSO I saw one or 2 programs you might find interesting
JASSO then you can follow up in finding a supervisor, I also recommend you have google maps open with you some of the good universities are in obscure places like Kyushu

ps: Also do as mad physicists mentioned look into research papers... but if your like me in Engineering/Design/Sciences look for the work being done in the research laboratories its a very direct path to finding a supervisor

To everyone who may be looking for a supervisor - the reason I suggest to look at research papers is that the websites of even the most famous universities in Japan often don't contain that much information about the work particular researchers are doing. That or they're hopelessly out of date. This goes double if you can't read Japanese and have to look at the English versions of the websites which are usually even more poorly-maintained.

So if you don't have any connection with a research group it can be quite difficult to find out which university is most suitable for your research, and you could miss out on a good opportunity.

Research papers in most fields are available in English and you should be able to find at least the abstract and the authors' affiliations online. It's generally quite easy to see which universities have the most publications in that field.

Wow, this board is really taking off! I think it's awesome that people are helping each other out so much. =) Speaking of helping each other out, I'm in need of some assistance again for myself. I'm a little confused on the application documents. What is the difference between abstract thesis and the Research Study/Research Program Plan document? Thanks in advance y'all!

who needs the other major centers when you've got Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Kagoshima, and Kumamoto?!?!?

I guess you already know about the "Field of study/Research program" form - if not, read the links on the first page of this thread.

When it says "abstract of thesis" it means you should include an abstract/summary of a thesis or longer project you have already written during your undergraduate or masters degree. If you have a published journal article you could put the abstract for that instead.

It's not clear to me if I should include an abstract for the project I'm working on right now, since I'm only 2 months in out of 6/7 months and don't know where it's going... anyone have an idea? I already have 2 projects and a journal article I could include instead.

Thanks for the fast reply. The guy who works at my local consulate finally got back to me and informed me on the differences. As for not having an abstract thesis already, he told me many people instead submit an abstract of a major paper that was done during your undergraduate years of school. It should correlate to your current interest of study. I hope that helps and thanks again for your assistance. =)

I believe Canada did (montreal). Also, it seems there was a change to the deadline - moved about 5 days later.

It seems like Pakistan just altered the guidelines for their own application process. I can't see any differences from previous years in the ones posted for Canada. Equally the odd rule about having to transfer to a PhD within one year is not there. I wonder what that's all about...
 
I emailed the UK embassy asking about the abstract (as i haven't completed my final year yet) and they said if you have not done a thesis just leave this section blank.
I also asked about the enrolling as a normal student, i thought you had to enrol as a research student then move across to a normal taught based course, but on the embassy website it says "research proposal or research for picking particular course", after asking it seems if you want to enrol as a normal student from the beggining, as long as you find out whether you can from the university, you can enrol this way.

Yup, you can do this. For most people the problem is that there is usually an entrance exam which you can only take in Japan. Of course if you're already in Japan, you can do the exam before the scholarship period starts.

Sometimes they might accept something else e.g. GRE scores in the place of the entrance exam. This doesn't seem to be very common though.

Lucky for me the 2 courses I'm mostly interested in require GRE/GMAT.
I think if the course is taught in english there is a higher chance of their not being any entrance exams, but the process is still confusing. I don't know whether it would be safer to try and enrol the research way and change across or just go for what i want from the beginning which is to be a taught student.

in other news, it was today last year the UK released the application forms, so hopefully should get them soon, quite frustrating that other embassies already have the documents up.

Perhaps if you can find out more about the format of the entrance exams you can decide what's the best option for you. Also note that some of these exams are only available once a year.

The prof in Kobe told me for their PhD "entrance exam" you just have to do a short oral presentation about your master's thesis or other recent work and answer some basic questions about what you plan to do for your PhD. It seems impossible to fail if the supervisor is on your side.

Yeah, it would be really helpful if they'd put up the information, especially for those of us applying from abroad!

Hi! Can you give me an example of a university's laboratory researches as I am still going to make my research proposal this week. Thank you in advance. I am a graduate of Civil Engineering and I'm trying to enroll in universities which offers a Master's program for either Transportation Engineering or Structural Engineering. :)
