Hey! I have been to Japan for a year too and I have included the year in the application, since I got the credits transferred and they counted towards my degree.

If it was part of your degree mention it. But if it was an additional year which didn't give you credits or count towards your overall degree, id mention it but also mention the fact that it wasn't necessary. As long as you have 16 years and the undergraduate degree, thats all that matters.
Thank you. On the next page they ask me if I have ever been in Japan and the reason, maybe answering that answer will be enough as a clarification? They transferred me some credits though, so I counted 17 years as you guys suggest.
There is another question I am not sure about: "10 Field of specialization studied in the past（Be as detailed and specific as possible.)"
Is it about what I studied at university? Or the theme of my thesis graduation?
In both the cases it would be strange I think because they asked me already what I study at university, and immediately after that question they ask me the title of my thesis and also an abstract of it.

I think those blue words are self-explanatory, hence it shouldn't be something about your future plan.
It should be what you studied in the past in details. For example, instead of putting "Japanese Studies" alone you should elaborate further of what you have studied eg. evolution of Japanese language (how it actually evolved), influence from China etc. in details. (I'm not actually from this field so the example may not be appropriate, but I hope you get what I mean)
As written on the application form, just be as detailed and specific as possible.

Well, the fact is that the subjects I studied are pretty general (Japanese history, literature etc.) and all of them were listed in another section...
Anyway I cannot change it anymore because I just sent all the documents, I put the name of my faculty and "Japanese language and culture". I hope it won't be a problem...

Hello, i just receive the written examinations results and they told me i didn't pass them because apparently i needed a better level of Japanese regardless of my english level, i was really shocked by this, and right now i really don't know what to do, so i want to ask you guys 2 things:
1) Do you think i should ask the universities that were willing to accept me how do i do to apply to the scholarship via University recommendation? is it possible to do so when i fail to pass the embassy recommendation?
2) Can i apply for the MEXT scholarship in a country different from my home country? if the answer is yes will i be competing against the people in my country or in the one I'm making the application from?, because this year was my first and only chance of applying in my country

Hi! Sorry you got this bad new.. You applied for undergraduate or research student? And, by the way, what is your major ? Because, actually some majors require a good level of Japanese language at least to pass, if I'm not wrong.
About your second question, In my country, it's clearly mentioned on the Embassy website that people from other countries can't apply for the scholarship. They have to refer to the Japanese consulate (if there is) in they home country. Not sure, but I guess it should be the same rule everywhere..

^ as a research student in medicine, i have already consulted in english with the professors so that's why this is a huge surprise for me, I'm not sure of what should i do now

okay. that surprise me as well. But we all know each Japanese Embassy has different criteria of selection. I'd better work hard and do my best on the Japanese exam.
If you have the agreement of the professor to support your application, you could go through uni recommendation, around October..

Hello SayuKami, try applying via University Recommendation. It starts around October or November. Contact your desired lab sensei, email him/her your letter of intent (program you'd like to join: medicine, and scholarship: mext) attach your CV/resume and if possible proposed study.

Perhaps this is too late to be helpful to you (I have been buried under my thesis project these few weeks...) but I found this blog post from someone who applied at the UK embassy last year:

She says she got the notification at the end of June. In the embassy guidelines it says interview will most likely be on 18th or 19th July.
She also talks a bit about how her interview was, which may be of more general interest!
Ye i emailed the embassy and they said end of June, but thanks for the link, always interested in reading about the interview stage.

Yes I know another candidate who was emailed for the interviews in Montreal.
Is this your second year applying? Your first interview?
Cool! And yes, this is my second year applying and the first time I get to the interview. I am so excited but scared too! I get very nervous in interviews so I will have to practice a lot....

wow really surprised to hear this I thought the whole point of being a research student is to reach N2 proficiency over 6months or 12months through heavy Japanese classes
This is scary.... My Japanese is not so good. Getting even more nervous now.....

mine is really poor too like E4 haha but you never know probably also depends on your program+ universities...I remember for one scholarship your required a higher level of Japanese competency if you decide to study outside the big cities
