I've applied for visa, but have yet received any flight details from the embassy.
My uni did tell me that I'm only allowed to move into dorm on weekdays (unless I'm willing to pay for hotel myself for weekend stay), and I have to arrive before Apr 5, so I guess I'll be either arriving on Apr 1 (Fri) or Apr 4 (Mon).
I could barely find a hotel at a decent price for September.I have finally received my flight details. I'm leaving on the 3rd and arriving late in the evening on the 4th. Since the international house office hours are 9:00 - 18:00, I'm gonna need to spend my first night at a hotel. Check capsule hotels and use Japanese sites!Kyoto is literally >95% full according to booking.com. Yikes.
Most of us at Kyoto university only get to stay at the offered dormitories for 6 months, so we're gonna have to rent apartments in September.
Also, to all of you MEXT scholarship grantees, be sure to join Log into Facebook | Facebook, a facebook page where the rest of us hang out. I managed to meet 7 people who are going to the same university already.
Not to forget the transport expenses involved travelling between your apartment and the campus.I agree with what you said, but I have to add that my dorm costs about 18.000 JPY per month, whereas an appartment would cost upwards of 50.000 JPY. When you add the other expenses like the deposit fee, reikin and shikikin it quickly becomes expensive. Plus you have to know that you're moving into an unfurnished flat, with nothing but a bathroom and kitchen unit. Furnishing it would cost at least another 100.000 JPY I guess ...

When you move closer to the campus you may pay higher rent in exchange for saving on transportation and the travel time. Likewise, the cheaper options (usually some distance away from the campus) will cost you higher on travel.
