New mobile phones from abroad should work in Japan, you should be able to sign a contract with a carrier, but afaik the plans are limited if you have your own phone. For example, you could get unlimited data if you get a phone from the carrier, but you can't if you don't. I'm by no means an expert in Japanese carriers, so you might better ask here on this forum or research on your own if you want to be sure what you're heading into. I plan to get a mobile phone from a carrier.

Yes, I have used a GSM phone in Japan. You have to sign up on the Docomo network, and it is expensive (8000yen/mo last time I checked), but on the bright side, if you have an Android phone on this plan, you are allowed to use tethering and get Wifi everywhere.

Guys,are you all bringing sum of 2 000 USD as they stated in guidelines?

Bringing $2000 USD for the first month is a smart choice, especially if you will be in Tokyo. You will need roughly that much money for living expenses, books, commuting, and paying rent.

Wiring money to Japan is a pain and sometimes impossible depending on your bank, but setting up a bank account is easy for foreigners, and keeping cash in your wallet is safe. If you drop it, someone will probably give it to the police.

has anyone enquired about how to ship large boxes to japan ? I am planning on shipping my computer and some other things ain a box which should save me money buying those things over there.

So glad to find this forum, it's very helpful! I'm planning to apply for MEXT but teacher training scholarship, not research. A friend who's currently studying in Ehime for Research like yours, guys, recommended this to me. We compared the procedures and he said it's completely the same. Maybe the difference is that this one is for teachers? I'm planning to submit my papers personally on Saturday (just had my medical today, have to come back to my doctor on Wednesday). Hope my story will end up just like yours guys, this forum encouraged me. Thanks all!

I'm bringing my wife so we will live in a private apartment (somewhere...) since Tokodai does not have dorms for couples/families. One thing they keep stressing is the limited number of dorms, it sounds like you get 6-12 months in a dorm (if selected) and then you find your own place.

MEXT is absolutely strict regarding only paying for your flight if you depart from home country, correct? I'm working abroad, just about 1/3 world away from both Japan & my home country... so thinking that I'll be paying for my own expensive flight. great.

I think they only pay for the plane ticket from the airport closest to the address given on your application. So that would probably mean you either fly back to that address first, or just buy your own ticket straight to Japan. Sorry to hear your situation :-/

Hello Everyone,

I passed the second screening but still did not get final placement notification yet! Most of the other guys along with me who have been passed through second screening got their final placement notification. I inquired in the embassy before two days and they said they did not get any communication from the university. Hence I contacted university and they said they are already waiting for my arrival. They have send all the detail to the MEXT and even got an E-mail form MEXT on 10 February stating that MEXT has notified to the candidate about their placement and arrival time in JAPAN. Even they said they will inform me about my accomodation in middle of March.

I don't know that why I did not get final placement notification yet! Could any one have any idea why this is happning?

You can ask your embassy regarding this. BTW our embassy officials provided us guide on that the guarantor can be the just university name, address and phone number.

Hi there I completed my visa form last week and they said I didn't need a guarantor, but just contact your embassy in case.

I am applying for Hokudai under these conditions, however I was told that I would only recieve my results in April, so I have no idea if I will pass or not.

I agree that contacting your embassy is best... Mine told me to fill in the name of my professor and the university address for that part. I handed in the form today.
