when does the application for the scholarship end up in your country?
It ends on May 10th so I didn't take too long to get everything together and posted. It took me exactly 14 days from to get everything together from scratch including both the research proposal and the required documents.
How are you doing with the preparations?

well, I wish to get the scholarship to be enrolled as a research student in one of the japanese universities specialized in Informatics. Now , I am a first year PhD student in my country. so to get the scholarship, I have to prepare for the English and Japanese exams. I dont have any skills in japanese language. For English, it is not my native language, so I started to prepare for the exam one month ago.
For the research project, I have already finished writting it

hey every one..im very glad to have found this forum. the information given by you all is very useful. im considering applying for the research student scholarship for a masters degree however the problem is that i have a very low gpa in my undergrad.. even though i have a good highschool score (alevels) and good scores on my japanese language tests im afraid my low gpa would get in the way. i dont want to make any excuses for why i have a low gpa, just that i screwed up, but i believe i have the ability to write up a good research plan and do well in my masters so i want to ask for your help do u think i should still give it a shot? does anyone know of someone who got the scholarship eventhough they had a low gpa in their undergrad. your response will be highly appreciated.

could you tell me what is gpa ? :?
gpa (grade point average ) is basically the over all grade that you get in your degree.

Ok, I see. Actually, I know an ex-classemate that she studies now in japan and she didn't use to have very good marks, she even repeated the first year. but I don't know whether she went there by applying to the MEXT scholarship or she funds her studies by herself..

There is no reason why shouldn't give it a try, the gpa marks are not the most important part of the application process. I know two people who are now studying in Japan through the MEXT scholarship and neither one of them was a particularly great student. They had a good research plan and showed that they were very enthusiastic about going to Japan.

1. If I've just graduated, should I fill my present status as "having graduated from +(name of my university)" or just "umemployed" or else?
2. If I never study Japanese language before, how should I fill Japanese language proficiency? That is, I should choose "poor" or doesn't mark it at all (just type " - " all the blank spaces).
3. Should I contract my proposed professors before sending my application or after getting MEXT? and Is it possible to mention more than one professor at the same university and department?

As for your first question, If I were you, I would write the last degree I have obtained. but i am not sure, you had better ask the embassy directly.
As for your second question, you don't have other choice than "poor" if you have never studied japanese before. beacause, when you start to fill in the form on line, you will notice that it respects a kind of format that doesn't let you write whatever and wherever you want.
As for your third question, you can contact prospective professors if you have enough time. then, if you pass the embassy screening, you will just have to ask them to send you the letter of acceptance.

Thanks, angelrokia. I wonder if I pass the embassy screening, ask my proposed professor the letter of acceptance and they send me the letters, do I still need to pass their entrance exam or I can enter the proposed department immediately as a research student?

Actually, I will be applying for the MEXT scholarship for the first time . so, I don't have a concrete idea about the steps in the process of MEXT scholarship.
but from what I've read in this forum and in the universities websites, research students,in the most of japanese universities, are the students who take courses related to their research fields, and prepare at the same time for the Phd or Master entrance exam, and they don't get a degree when they finish their research studies which last for one or two years. So , in general they don't have to take an entrance exam from the beginning. conclusion :I don't think that you will need to pass the entrance exam if you pass the embassy screening.

By the way, what is the number of words for writing the study plan? Someone told me it should be about 1000 words but now my study plan is only about 550 words. So I quite get worried.

hello, I recently applied for the undergrad MExt scholarship for architecture and was reading this thread when a few questions popped up:
The math and phy in the 2010 paper were crazy! Are you saying it was relatively easier in 2011 and 2012? How did yours go?
Are there any other ref material of past question papers out there on the internet which would help? This exam is very secretive.

I feel that in this year,it will go crazier than the previous two years... So prepare for the worst, hope for the best
In the worst case,I think they released easy exams as past exams to trick us into thinking these are the level of exams but the true exam will likely go harder. Even the easy questions still are tricky, there "always" is at least a tricky point. The really easy and no trick question will be "at most" only one sub-problem if they consider to include that one in the best case (Actually they include it to make you think "oh, these questions in fact are pieces of cake and you will fall their trap in other questions because of this carelessness). In the worst case, there is no such a question.
I'm pessimistic. Now they are finding tricky points to trick us as much as possible. The information given in the exam may be not what you're thinking. Be aware!

It's been a while since the last time I wrote here.
I've sent out my application yesterday and received a letter that everything reached them today, which made me breath a relief, those documents took a lot of work to gather! O:
I have high hopes for myself since very little people go for the Specialized Training Colleges, I'm the first one from my country to go for it! O:
Also, like you guys have to write a research proposal, I made my portfolio (My choice of field - Design) to send out with other documents to show my motivation, even though it wasn't necessary.
I'm pretty confident about the exams, too. Like my Japanese teacher said, even if I fail the other ones, my Japanese grade will push me upwards, so she's not worried. Although I plan to get at least 80 from English and at least 50 from Math, too as I try to believe that I'm not all that stupid xDD
But I do agree with Magician! I've noticed that their questions are as silly as it can get in its way of trickiness. It's annoying, really XDDD

The exam here in NZ is only 12 days away!
I'm quite certain I'll get 90+ in English and Japanese, and 80 at the very least for chemistry. It's just Physics and Maths that worry me, and since I plan to do Engineering I may be in trouble. Quite odd how those two were my better subjects in A/AS Level (A* in Maths and A in Physics AS) but the lack of calculator and such hurt quite a bit.
And since I'm applying for direct placement I need to get even higher than normal.
Which brings me to my question, what kind of score would get me into direct placement? I'm applying for Tokyo, Kyoto and TITech.
And regarding the interview, I read that I'm allowed to do it in both english and Japanese, but is there any difference between the two? I passed N2 with 100% in listening last year without studying at all, and while Japanese wouldnt be a problem if I had to use it to have a better chance, I've lived in NZ for nearly 11 years and I still prefer speaking english, especially for such an important interview just in case I screw something up.
