Oh, and why did you choose special training college instead of college of technology or undergraduate studies? o:

I bet it's quite beneficial to include 2 choices of study, but in my case, there's nothing else I want to study from the same field! XD I'm going for "design" and I have very little interest in art, photography or such. I'd like to study culinary, but it's in another field of study, damn it :V

The applications opened yesterday, and the deadline is May 10th, so less than 4 weeks for everything. :)
 
Hi, I'm still a first year math student at a good british university, and I'm thinking of maybe attempting to get into somewhere like Tokyo/Osaka/Kyoto for a Master's if all goes to plan and I graduate in Summer 2015. Now, I have a few questions about the MEXT scholarship.

If you apply for MEXT 2014, when do you begin study in Japan? October 2013? April 2014?
How do I apply? To the embassy or directly to the universities?

I guess I'm still a long way away from applying and i could change my mind but if so, I want to know as much as possible to make sure it's right for me. I'll probably be MEXT 2016 if I go for it.

Oh? What do you mean by program? My question about the spec training college, techno college and undergraduate?
Personally, I believe that college of technology would be most befitting as it is a school specializing in technologies! XD Therefore, you should be able to get better education on your subjects than studying in the spec training college. Besides, just look at all the specialized courses! O: You're bound to find a few things you're truly interested in, right?

And well, undergraduate is when you enter a university, not a college. But university studies tend to be more theoretical than practical, at least in my country. That's why I'm going for spec training college, as practice will be a lot more valuable in my field of study.

I'll apply for Monbusho 2014 isA and I also applied last year but unfortunately I didn't earn it. I didn't even pass the document screening.
what could you advise me in order to increase my chance?

I'm filling out the application attachment and I have a question I hope you guys can help me with.

In 7.iii) it asks the term you wish to study in Japan. Option d says "until the professional graduate course completion". How is this different from the doctoral course?

Ooooh that sounds so interesting! I really do think that the embassy would be interested in your thesis, because I think it is easily applicable worldwide! I don't know much about virology, but I can only imagine how it would take a while to write the research proposal! But don't give up it really is a very interesting and useful topic! 👍

I am currently a 1st year Ph.D. student in English Literature, and I have applied to do Comparative English and Japanese Modern Literature. :)

That's awesome! How are finding studying in Japan in general? Also did you get straight on the PhD after you arrived in Japan, because i heard that you have to become a research student and then apply to take the PhD while out there!

Asmaa and Mohamed...
Japanese proficiency is not a must for acceptance, it just makes it easier for you once you arrive to Japan.
Most important point in document screening is your research plan, it must show how dedicated you are to your work and how versatile you can go, reading about your field and understanding it, how can you start a new project from your own experience is important too. If you have a certain researcher in your mind, contact him/her and start discussing future work, you can use their ideas to support yours if he/she is willing to accept you.

About Embassy/University recommendation.... if you are still in your home country then go for the Embassy, because to the best of my knowledge, university recommendations are best suited for students who are already in Japan and their supervisors are willing to apply for them and recommend them, that's what I think, if I am wrong please correct me.

O no no, sorry I meant to say that I am currently a first year Ph.D. student in MY country studying English Literature, and since I found a huge gap in the literature theories when it comes to Western perception of Japanese (Asian in general) literature, I've decided to apply for a Japanese scholarship to fill that gap. I also hope that this will be a good argument if I reach the interview stage, because I can say that I've already done a lot of work in my research area, and found a hole that needs filling - so to speak. xD

Btw, I also heard that you have to be a research student first and then do the Ph.D. , which I am totally fine with. But in the documents I still circled that I would start off at the doctorate level because I am already a doctoral student. It is up to them to decide whether you should be a research student first or not. :)

That is true. I am currently in Japan on MEXT research scholarship (my first month, yay) and I'm a 'graduate research student'. But during the first month after arrival you apply for the extension of scholarship for whole doctoral course, you write research proposal (again), which in many cases is the same as the previous one and your professor writes recommendation for you.

Did you want to do the research from the start, or did you circle something else and then they asked you to start as a research student?

Personally, I think that it would be a lot better to start of as a research student, but I was just told to circle my final goal, and then it would be easier for them to organize your stay once you get there. :haihai:
 
I circled research, because on the webside of my University it was written that I have to start as a research. This is understandable, because before I can enroll as a PhD student I have to pass the exam. Everyone I know here started as a research student and then got their scholarship extended for doctoral or master course.

I'm kinda confused about the research proposal though! Does anyone know how much detail we have to put into it? I was told by the embassy to only write a couple of pages, and try not to make it too tedious to read (since it will be reviewed by the people at the embassy). Since I'm still only doing my bachelors degree, I've never had to do any research myself, so I don't know where I should start with it! Do you think it would be weird if I contacted the professor at Nagoya Uni for advice? (I've already contacted him a few times to enquire about entry into his lab (before I thought to apply for this scholarship), and have gotten some reasonably promising responses). I heard from the embassy that you're meant to wait until after passing the interview stage to contact professors, so is it just an annoyance to start contacting them so early? Idk, I'm lost.

Hey! All the best with your application process! :)

This is the first time that I've heard an embassy say that a research proposal should not be too detailed. Your proposal is the most important thing when it comes to picking you as a candidate. If it is not clear and too short, you will not get the scholarship even if you do great on the Japanese exam. Although I understand that it shouldn't be too many pages long, make sure that you know exactly what you want to do in Japan. The most important elements in your proposal are:
1. Why you want to do it?
2. How are you going to do it?
3. And why is it beneficial for your country?

There is nothing wrong with contacting professors early on if you have enough time. I've contacted my potential universities over a month ago even though the written test hasn't even happened yet. :) Just write that you are currently applying for the MEXT scholarship and that you would like to study at their university if you get the scholarship. Most professors are surprisingly helpful. :)

Having to write the research proposal threw me off a little, since I'd only planned on doing masters, and not starting my own research just yet...
