MEXT Doctoral Program And Never Been to Japan

Hi guys. I am very confused here. So I just discovered that the deadline for MEXT for students seeking a doctoral program is next month. However, when I read on the application, it requests for your immigration records to Japan. I have never been to Japan, and I think the people making the decisions would be hesistant in accepting someone for future commitement to a 6-year program if they didn't think they'd make it all the way through.

Another thing I don't get is in the guidelines, it states you must make your "utmost effort" in securing acceptance to the universities after the primary screening but on the application attachment, it asks whether you have already secured it and if not, explain why?! I do not get this contradiction. Even one of the two universities I am interested in clearly states that you have to send them the documents after you get the statement that you have passed the primary screening, and then they will make their admission decision.

If anyone can help me out with these conundrums, I would greatly appreciate it!

well... let me try to help

1- about the "never been in Japan" is a negative point to your application (I think), however there are some people that got accepted without any Japanese (language) knowledge or travel/study experience.

2- probably they want to know if you already got in touch with some future professor/supervisor... since in Japan if you got an "ok" from these professors, your chances to get into the university is much higher (at least... from what I heard).

I think lots of applicants have never been to Japan prior to receiving the scholarship. I guess it depends on your situation and hopes.

You get to fill out the university form before you get the interview, however, you have to only submit it after the embassy selection. This means that you get the chance to change your mind. However it might be useful to tell them which universities or programs you are going to apply to so they can at least know that Japan has universities offering the education program that you are looking for.

Is the phd program 6 years? Most programs in Japan are only 3 years and they will try to keep to those requirements. The scholarship might be up to 6 years, no idea.
