I find poor spelling and grammar irritating. Ususally it lowers my opinion of posters, which I admit is probably a little unfair.

You're the one doing the lowering, but the blame is passed on in the passive.

In an age of automatic checkers, poor spelling is just laziness.

They don't provide one on the forum although member Shooter42 beggged.

Non-native speakers are excepted of course.

I've seen plenty of non-native speakers abuse the patrons; eg. me.

I admire people who 'fight their corner', and put up a good argument, even if I don't necessarily agree with it.

I despise people who excessively generalize or make ill-judged sweeping statements; especially if this is solely based on flimsy evidence or personal opinion.

Most of all I abhore people who 'blow smoke' even when they themselves know they have erred, or pertain to be experts in areas where they are not.

I am truly mortified. I try and make all my posts, even in the j-pop section, meaningful in the sense of making a real contribution to the discussion... but I occasionally get carried away and start hugging people and throwing random cookies around. :sorry: I have also used the dreaded word "Eeeeeeeeeeeeee!!" no less than twice in writing, for which I deserve to be thoroughly beaten.

i think anyone thats got over 2000 posts to their name, they are acclaimed parts of this forum, it takes a lot of dedication to get to that amount.
Surely its impossible for anyone to get over a 1000 just posting meaningless stuff, so i say congrats to those with high post counts and i hope i be joining you in the future.

The total time the fingers touch the keys while writing would hardly amount to 10 seconds for a 200 word post, while making it right might take a 100 times that, but an inspiration might only take a split second, might take longer than writing it and righting it. Still giving it an appearance of brevity is the toughest.

That's an excellent quote, mike. Wasn't Pepys the guy who wrote an journal in the late 1600's chronicalling the reign and fall of two kings? I searched for it and came up with a number of people to whom the quote is attributed, including G.B. Shaw, Blaise Pascal, Voltaire and Mark Twain.

Either way, I'm definately going to find an excuse to use that quote in the future!

Yeah, that idea is so embedded in the writer's maxim that I'm sure there's been more than one writer who's come up with some form of that quote. Another one along those lines goes something like "easy writing makes hard reading" (or hard writing makes easy reading). In any case, it's all very true. What irks me aren't necessarily long rambling posts (as long as the poster knows about paragraphs), but posts that are just a single sentence or phrase which don't add much. Ah well, I'll just have to deal.
