News Japan's train stations to introduce credit card pay gates

Tokyo Metro, Tokyu and Kyushu Railway are set to roll out tap-to-pay gates for credit cards, easing the current payment hassle for tourists. These contactless fare payment systems are compatible with credit and debit cards in a push to make the services more convenient for foreign tourists. Tokyo Metro, which runs subway lines in the country's capital, will begin a trial for the service on some lines in fiscal 2024 using a platform developed by Sumitomo Mitsui Card, a subsidiary of Sumitomo Mitsui Financial Group.

Riders who buy a special ticket online in advance will be able to pass through the ticket gate by holding their credit card over a sensor. Credit, debit and prepaid cards can be used, as well as smartphone QR code-based payments. Most transit systems in the country use proprietary card systems like Suica, operated by East Japan Railway, and Pasmo, backed by Tokyo Metro and other transit operators in the metro area, that let riders quickly tap to enter ticket gates. Visitors to Japan must buy their own transit card to use during their stay or purchase paper tickets for each ride. Rail companies stand to benefit from reduced costs related to the installation and upkeep of ticket machines if card-based payments catch on.
