Hey everybody, This place has always been the authoritative source of info in anything Japanese for me. So recently I've decided to start teaching Japanese through anime on YouTube and this is the first installment .

And since the people here are the best of the best, I thought you guys might be able to tell me how I could improve? 😌 Or if you like it?

The link is in my sig

Thanks a lot

Hmm, the first thing you teach is how to curse wow thats useful.. Seriously if you want to teach Japanese through anime or whatever then maybe you should do simple stuff like how to say your name etc, talk about why you use what you use in the sentence, grammer points and the like and build up from there. For people who are wanting to seriously learn Japanese teaching them how to curse is kind of useless at a beginners stage and besides that its just not a good idea in general to teach swearing imo.

Well, I liked the bit about apple juice. But I don't like Naruto, so it left me a bit cold.
Here's my idea how you could improve your video:
Instead of using those words just with animated comics like Naruto, do some skits with actual Japanese people. Find some obnoxious loudmouth, and have them shout insults at real Japanese people. Then we'll be able to see how effective all these insults are in real life.

I learn something new today.

Kuso ha, watashi wa ie ni imasu

Aww thats great! I'm glad i could help you learn something new!

Thanks soo much for you advice!

I was trying to think up something to get peoples attention for my first video, also since exclamatory's are usually used by themselves out of a sentence. They are very easy to pick out and are one of the first things people usually learn about Japanese (unfortunately...😌)

But I agree fully with everything you said, and I'm gonna use what you helped me with in my next video.

Thanks again!

Haha! that's a great idea! Thanks a lot, and sorry about leaving you in the cold, I would never want to do that you.

I can confirm that. I have a page of "Japanese insults" on my web page below and you'd be amazed how much search traffic it gets. Here are a few of the search terms from the last week:
list of insults to a japanese person
swear in japanese
japanese bad words
swear words in japanese
bad words in japanese
insults in japanese
japanese swear words
japanese insults
insulting words in japanese
japanese insults romaji
This is just a sample.

Wow, thats very interesting data!

And btw your webpage is an awesome resource! I don't know how I never found it before (I did a lot of online research when I learning Japanese years ago)

Though 1 thing Ken, I didn't find the toilet humor very pleasing.
i know your being helpful and such, But i doubt some of the stuff was just unneeded.

Oh I'm so sorry! I will definitely keep that in check in the future, thanks for the advice!

I thought it was funny! My only problem with it was the music volume. I sometimes found it difficult to hear what you were saying, but could hear the music perfectly. Maybe try to tweak that in future videos. :]

Ah, yes I'm terribly sorry about that! I didn't notice until I posted it on YouTube. But thanks for pointing it out, I will indeed tweak that from now on.

I'm glad you thought it was funny though! :-)

I'm surprised. I thought you would be about 12 years old.

Hey everybody, thanks again to everybody who commented and gave their advice! I really really appreciate it!

And taking into consideration some of the more imperative suggestions I've made part 2!

The link is again in my sig for anybody who is still willing to give me their advice or just wants to take a look

I unfortunately wasn't able to take all the suggestions made here, because by the time received them I already had started on part 2. But I will continue to improve upon what you guys so kindly recommended in upcoming videos!

Thanks again everybody!

The background music doesn't work at all, it would be much better without it.

I'm not sure why you pronounce the words in opposite order.

In the subtitles, stollen -> stolen

I don't think ちぇ is a "cuss word". Also, you've got the meaning slightly wrong.

By the way, in case you missed it, there was a funny (?) thread here from someone who learnt Japanese from cartoons: What is the polite way of saying "koitsu"?

Like I said in my PM, Thanks so much for your advice Ben!

And just in case anyone is still interested I've finally gotten around to making another video!

Of course I would love any feedback you guys can give me, Thanks again!

Please excuse the double post but I did want to let you guys know I got to installment 4, link in sig.

Btw, your guy's advice really made a big difference and I'm really grateful!

Ok video number... 5? I think? well anyway its on How to say "I love you" in Japanese.

Enjoy =)

I don't think 窶堋ソ窶堋・ is a "cuss word". Also, you've got the meaning slightly wrong.

I'm going to quote in entirety a post I made in another forum on the subject of cursing (and "che" features in it, too. ;) )

***

Actually, the nice thing about much Japanse invective is that it really *isn't* "potty mouthing" in the same sense a lot of English invective is. The same word -- for example, "shimatta" -- can be as mild as "darn it" or "poo!" or as harsh as calling down blasphemies and tossing in an MF for good measure. A lot of it is in HOW it is being said, who is saying it, and what the situation is. As in all things, context is king. An elementary school kid muttering a quiet "shimatta" to himself when he forgets his homework is, say, no different than a similar kid in Kansas saying, "oops..." A businessman may say "shimatta" over a failed contract, and that might come across more as "dammit!" Friends playing penny ante poker and one losing a hand to another may smile, shake his head, and say "shimatta" when an American counterpart might do the same thing and say, "well, crap."

"Che" also exists in English, as a variety of sounds ranging from "tsk" to, "pfff" to, well, "che." As a sound, it doesn't actually have meaning -- rather, in evokes an emotion.

"Kuso" does, of course, mean "****" -- but just as "poo!" or "poop!" or "crap!" are softer forms of the expletive (all meaning the same thing), so can "kuso" function across a gamut of qualities. Unfortunately, many translators forget these simple facts, and make elementary and junior high school kids (in Japanese anime) come across as cursing like a sailor.
