Japanese IME

ok, so I've had the jp IME installed for quite some time now, but I keep getting this problem..

on japanese games and the readme files for them i get only jibberish!

here's an excerpt from a readme:

and the options menus and the likes in the games (as well as the install) are all question marks...

why is this?
 
IME is only for typing Japan in input fields. It doesn't display or attempt to display Japanese on programs or webpages as many people mistake it for. To make Windows display Japanese on programs, you have to change the regional settings. I'm not sure how to do that now on my work computer. Perhaps someone can help or you can do a search.

I swear, people these days. EVERYTHING has to be done for you! First you want a Japanese game, so you learn Japanese. Oooooh, but you can't handle when it goes to GIBBERISH!?

Are you people so lazy these days that you can't just get off your butt and learn gibberish? Is it THAT hard to learn? God damn you lazy bums, even BABIES can do this! BABIES can do something that you're lazy rear ends can't. I think that speaks for itself...

Put some effort into it and I'm sure you'll get it down in a few weeks, hell go to a preschool if you need a tutor. You're probably too cheap to shell out a few pennies to a 4 year old though.

You all make me SICK.




(Seriously though, Keiichi is probably right. I'd consider writing even Microsoft if you really need to find a way to switch the settings, just don't expect much.)

Okay, I'm at home now. To do this (as I recall) for Windows XP, you first have to go to:
Control Panel > Date, Time, Language, and Regional Options > Regional and Language Options
On the tab, Advanced, you'll see a section called "Language for non-Unicode programs." Select "Japanese" for it and follow whatever it says. You'll probably have to restart your computer. I tried this before, but have changed it back to English because it caused some of the text for other non-Unicode programs to display weirdly (very small text, or some sort), and running Japanese programs on my computer isn't really necessary. Go knock yourself out.

OK readme is one thing. Get JWPce or open the readme in MS Word. In either case it should either 'guess' the encoding correctly or allow you to choose for it. (Likely options are Japanese (s-jis), Japanese (EUC) etc.)

ApLoc aka AppLocale.

It's either that on a program by program basis or, as others have suggested, change your default for non-unicode programs. (The latter has some drawbacks such as \ characters turning into ￥ in explorer etc.)

Oh, of course I wasn't serious. Think of who I was responding too, that should tip you off right away. Plus my real response was at the bottom.

Unless gibberish is an offical language that twisted MUST LEARN then I'm just being weird as usual

If you have Win 9x try NJ Star communicator. Search google for it.
 
NJ Star doesn't work. It's another input program.
I encountered the same problem on my comp when I tried to install Drill Milkey Punch. No luck. I had to reverse engineer the installer and then squeeze files out by hand. I was desperate
the only thing I can think of is to buy XP in japan, because regional settings wont work. English XP has all the main files written in english, so by default, everything is displayed in english. I should know.
or try and get by without even reading anything.

Generally if the dialogs are complete gibberish you can go with the defaults

will see most programs installed.

And I'm _really_ not sure what you mean by 'everything' there - because it isn't the definition in my dictionary.

If you can be a little more precise maybe someone could help you.

Drill Milkey Punch is a melee arcade game. Japan release only.
Dialogs didn't work because I got (this is the most I got from the installer) "Error 116: *jibberish*"
And I say main files because all the files that keep Xp running at it's best are written in english. I should know. I've decompiled (ripped the source code from) them so many times.
Now if all of windows dialogs and menus are all made to be displayed in english, what would a dialog from a program come as? english. or an attempt at it.

and FYI, yes, I'm a hacker

As whatever the program wants it to come as. Because the program isn't Windows XP itself. As long as I've had 'Language for non-unicode programs' set to Japanese I've never had a Japanese program or installer fail to deliver legible Japanese text.

[EDIT]Oh yes and if you'd done a little Googling instead of all that 'reverse engineering' you'd have seen that the distributed set-up file was stuffed from the start (nothing to do with not being on Japanese Windows XP) and a replacement was available from the web.

and for the non-unicode thing
I would use that as well, but unfortuantely, Linux ports to Windows are non-unicode as well. Try using the GIMP in japanese (=x_x=)

whoa, what is it? I will not go to microsoft's site. my cd key will be registerred as invalid and thus my XP system will be terminated. Happened before.
Just tell me what AppLoc is.

It enables you to locally set language for non-unicode programs without changing the general default.

Here's an idea, evil as it may sound.....How about actually PAYING for a copy of XP?

I built this computer, and many of my computer-savvy friends laughed at me for being so stupid as to shell out the bucks for a legitimate copy of XP (got the OEM version and saved a few bucks, though).

Of course, I usually get to laugh at them when their computers eventually get FUBARed because of stuff like you mentioned.
 
question on IME and not having non-Unicode Japanese

I deselected Japanese for non-Unicode programs for serious trouble with non-Japanese pgms. Does that mean my IME will not work for gana/kana input?

I apologize in advance if I'm repeating an old question.

No, it will work just fine if the program supports it. If you want to use Japanese-native programs in Windows, you need have Japanese select for Non-Unicode programs.

One game I play detects if this is set, and also detects if you're IME is set to Japanese as default. If not -- no play. Very sneaky way of keeping the gaijin out.
