Hi,

I am in intermediate and beginning advance Japanese. So far the material is quite easy, but there is ALOT of kanji, but I am enjoying it greatly:)

I have a question about mixing grammar rules.

Before I type my question, I am going to use these examples.

Grammar rules

-Hougaii desu yo (advice)
-koto ga arimasu/arimasen (describing experiences)

Sentence one using ~hougaii desu yo

ex) motto kanji wo naratta hougaii desu yo. Try learning more kanji.

Sentence two using ~koto ga arimasu/arimasen

chugokugo wo benkyoushita koto ga arimasen. I have never studied Chinese language before.

Currently in class, we are going over chapter 13 in the Genki series book.

Can I mix two of the grammar points with verb + miru (to try) ?

Try studying everyday - mainichi benkyoushite mita hougaii desu yo.
Try not to sleep for about 5 hours today - kyou wa goji kan gurai ni nete minai hougaii desu yo.

Please try to sing - utatte mite kudasai
I have never tried to sing before- watashi wa utatte mita koto ga arimasen
my sister has tried to learn to sing - watashi no ane wa utau ni naratte mita koto ga arimasu.

Are my 5 sentences correct in grammar and mixing in combination?

Sorry for not using Japanese characters. My university computer does not have a program to write in Japanese.

~ほうがいいですよ has more soft nuance, like "I think it's better to~."

5時間くらい寝た方がいい is correct, but 5時間くらい寝ない方がいい sounds awkward when advising "not to stay asleep about five hours". It should be 5時間以上 or 5時間も for the case. 5時間くらい寝ない方がいい means "You should stay up for about five hours".

今日は5時間以上寝てみないほうがいい is used in a context that to sleep over five hours is a try/challenge for the addressee. For instance, the addressee has a disease that to sleep long time causes a symptom, so the speaker tells them that to sleep five hours is today's limit. Although this can also mean "You should stay up for over five hours".

姉は歌を習ってみたことがない is not wrong but 習ったことがない is more common.
