Yesterday, the Japanese government announced that it would tighten export controls for advanced chip manufacturing equipment, joining U.S.-led efforts that seek to impede China's ability to develop high-end semiconductors capable of being used for military purposes.

This equipment is necessary for making advanced high-performance logic chips used for arithmetic operations with circuit widths of 10 to 14 nanometers or less. About ten companies, including Tokyo Electron, Screen Holdings and Nikon, are expected to be affected. "The targets to be covered by the export controls are not areas with large markets, and we believe that the impact on corporate performance will be limited," said a senior trade ministry official.
