They might have been there, but that does not give them the right to then seize a piece of Chinese land and proclaim it as their own. How would you feel if the American fleet led by Perry had not only broken Japans isolation, but decided to seize part of Japanese land as US soil because they were just there?

Japan has not apologized formally
I have to remind you that Japan hasn't ever apologized for China about the aggression in any Japanese formally documents.
only in 1995 Japanese prime minister generally apologized for all asian people of the time. so none can rebuke China for the request to apologize endlessly.
To apologize or not is a matter of Japan, China can't say more, but I wish Japan consider it solemnly.
