Is this traditional Japanese music?

[Kazuto Kirigaya]

In the Fairy Tail anime, the main theme sounds more like traditional Chinese music with the flute thing, though it is in an anime so I thought that it might be Japanese. Is it?
And if it is, could you tell me the instruments used and the time period so I can listen and research on it more?
