IME and Japanese Websites

I've installed IME, also installed the Asian language font pack under the Regional and Language Options. Thus, I've been able to view Japanese websites, and texts in general properly. However, there are a few times when certain websites, and certain files have Japanese that for some reason my computer is unable to decode; it displays as meaningless strings of occidental characters and symbols. If I were to take a guess, I'd say that those belong to a different type of encoding that obviously my computer doesn't have. Any suggestions?

If you can set the encoding with the browser you use, try a few of the Japanese encodings (eg. SHIFT-JIS) or the Unicode ones in case the encoding is autodetected wrong (or speficied wrong in the page).

Ok, that takes cares of websites, I presume. What about files in the computer, like song titles, and whatnot?

If you have all the language packs installed along with the IME, windows should pick up on the unicode font.

If it's not unicode, windows explorer won't show it. If it's music files that you are having problems with, look up the album and either 1, put it in Romaji, or 2, use the IME and type the Japanese yourself, and it should appear.

This goes for any other files you might have too.

If you're using an English version of Windows and you set your default language to Japanese under Regional Options in the Control Panel, it will set your default Windows font to a Japanese font, which will support part of Unicode (the part you care about).

Individual applications will have to support Unicdode in order to be able to display Japanese correctly, however.

To make sure your japanese setting work in other programs like Word, Outlook, etc you need to check the 'Extend support of advanced text services to all programs'
