The guy from Ringu is really cool (can't remember his name right now) I was a little upset when he died. Same with Ken Watanabe's character...even though I expected it.
If I were in Tom's shoes (at the moment of the beheading) I doubt i'd have waited to see what the guy had to say -.-
Sometimes I wonder....sheesh...anyways, I didn't like how patriotic the ending was either.

Also, the silent samurai ...he's pretty famous/popular to see in the samurai movies....Him and Katsumoto's son were the ones that brought a tear to my eye.

I too have the dvd and I really liked the film, even though Tom Cruise had the leading role..
Ken Watanabe is really good with character acting as Katsumoto....a better actor than Cruise for sure....!!!

Too bad he did not get an Oscar for "Actor in supporting role", as he was nominated and really deserved it.

The scene where everyone was slayed by that "primitive" machine-gun type, with handles was very powerful. It reminded me of the descriptions of WW1 Europe, especially battle of sommes where British soldiers where slayed in 'no man's land' between the trenches, by the more "modern" machine gun of the Germans.

It shows the superiority of modern, fire weapons over feudal/medieval weapons...GOOD FILM!!!

Some reviewers have compared the film with Kevin Costner's "Danicing with Wolves"...well, it may have some similarities, but not much!!
I liked The Last Samurai much more than Costner's movie, which was too long with some few unnecessary scenes....

There's no comparrison, I think, Last Samurai is a way better movie in all aspects.

Also, Ken Watanabe made that movie....if he wasn't in it then it probably would have bombed.

I agree with you all on Ken Watanabe. He's a GREAT actor and definitely should have won an Oscar for his work. The movie really would have BOMBED if Watanabe hadn't been in it....
Katsumoto's son's death was really a very tragic one. I was upset to see him die ;_;

and Tom definitely would NOT have been able to even get close to a draw with Sanada in that battle. I found that scene to be very iffy. After all, he was only there for ONE year.

My mouth was open all the time when I watched the movie....it kinda started my affection for Japan....I LOVE THIS MOVIE !!!! well...I wish my Japanese improved that fast as his(Tom cruise) in 1 year .....

I agree!! The Academy Awards are politically "correct", some have suggested anyway. And actors who really deserve an award get passed for lesser talents....(mostly, in my opinion). "Lost in Translation" did not get a big recognition at the awards because some said it was too racist. ??!!
Like when the Academy Awards were accused of being selective by giving awards to only white actors, and "suddenly" a couple of years ago, both Halle Berry and Denzel Washington got awards....weird??!!

Who decide that who get an oscar? What is the jury composed of anyway? "experts"....it should be public voting - then I am sure Ken Watanabe would have won instead of Tim Robbins.....Watanabe is a great talent! ....and much better looking than Robbins..
GIVE KEN WATANABE AN OSCAR!!!

that was an excellent movie. the one part i really liked was that tom and the girl did not get too romantic. it was perfect.

One of Tom's more memorable lines for me was just before the last battle took place.
"I'll look for you on the field" That made me laugh. I thought it was pretty funny.

I didn't like the "remember who/what you are and what you should and always stand for" ending. Humour wasn't really necessary, in fact, I didn't Billy Conolly and that fat geezer but I thought the Bob thing was funny. Good movie I'd say but not the ending. I liked the soundtrack as well so I got it

I was watching a show about the making of the movie, and they had a long interview with Tom Cruise. Apparently he doesn't understand how to pronounce a single Japanese word -.-
