WAH! WHAT CAN I SAY???!!!!!!THIS MOVIE WAS AWESOME!!!!!IT WAS MADE BEAUTIFULLY AND I LOVE THE STORY LINE!!!OMG!!!!!!I AM SO HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!! 😄 👍 :p 🙂 :D :-)

I didn't like the "remember who/what you are and what you should and always stand for" ending. Humour wasn't really necessary, in fact, I didn't Billy Conolly and that fat geezer but I thought the Bob thing was funny. Good movie I'd say but not the ending. I liked the soundtrack as well so I got it :)

I need to buy the soundtrack, but the movie was very good.
I was VERY pleasantly suprised.
I was certain the movie would just be another nasty little hack and slash without a plot (like every other movie made here in the US of A) but i've grown to love The Last Samurai . I just purchased it myself. I agree with Goggles though, ending was lame.

yeah, i thought the bob thing was really funny. i didn't really care for the ending part with the emperor though...kinda lame. 👍 :haihai:

I liked the movie a lot too. I agree that they would have been better off ending it with that scene on the battlefield where Ken Watanabe dies and all the soldiers who had just been fighting against him suddenly bow down in respect to him. Still, thats a minor fault I think.

I live in Himeji, which is where all the temple scenes where Tom Cruise and Ken Watanabe talk about their philosophy and wot not were filmed. Naturally, it was a big hit locally, but I've decided not to buy the DVD as they are regionally encoded so when I eventually move back to Canada it'll be useless to me. Stupid DVD manufacturers just cost themselves a sale.

I was a little wary about this film before it came out in the cinemas simply because it's Tom Cruise we're talking about here. I just couldn't imagine seeing Tom in samurai armour. But it turned out fine I guess.

By the way, remember when Tom gets his face whacked by the wooden katana? Ouch.

As for the guy who whacked Tom, isn't he from Ringu? And the older brother, I could've sworn I've seen him somewhere before as well... * scratches head *

Speaking of those two brothers, the little one cracked me up when he made faces at Tom at the dinner table. He's adorable.

Hah! I agree, imagining tom cruise in samurai armor was difficult, and a little unappealing. I don't particularly like him in the first place - but he was fine in this movie.
Yes, the guy who whacked Tom Cruise (Hiroyuki Sanada) is in Ringu. I like him ^^
And I think i've seen the oldest son in another movie too...can't place my finger on it though. *thinks*
I was a little irked about being unable to find his character (the oldest son) on most of the movie site..things...He may not have been a main character but he played an important role and did a damn good job at it too.
The little boy really was terribly adorable. I don't know if I would have been able to keep a straight through that scene had I been acting in it.

yeah, tom cruise is one of my least fave actors except in Top Gun and Last Samurai....but i have to admit, he did a pretty dang good job in this movie. the girl...er...wah!!!!! i already forgot her name....she's pretty. i didn't know some scenes were filmed in Himeji!? wow! thanx for replieing guys!!!!

She was very pretty!
I was only able to find her first name on the sites I went to though =\
I appreciated how the movie didn't focus to much on romance ^^

OMG that chick acted in Beautiful Life? I just checked Buddha Smoker's link and I found that out. Wow. I"m gonna watch the rest of the series then LOL. Has anyone seen Beautiful Life? It's a J-Drama.

Oh another part was the part where Tom fires at the newbie soldier. "Ute! Ute!" Tom yells. The fact the bullet only missed him is crock. Those bullets are ball bearings aren't they? That means they aren't aero-dynamic and they don't fly in a straight line (or as straight) compared to today's ammo. Those shots that were fired by Tom could of hit anyone! LOL. That part made me shake my head and gave me a little chuckle as well.

Her name is Koyuki (little snow) and has just the one name for some reason. She is indeed babe-ish, as the great bard William Shakespeare once said:

'Wouldst I not kicketh her out of bed for passing wind betwixt the sheets.'

Or words to that effect.

Yeah, I remember hearing her full real name a long time ago but I can't find it now... even on Japanese TV now she goes by Koyuki..I'm still drawing a blank about it but it's right there.

Also, one part of Last Samurai that I find funny (after my wife and her mother told me) is when she is washing her hair in the waterfall.....I know it was for the movie but nobody did that around that time.....and my wife was the one saying that..not me....after all I'm the stupid gaijin according to my wife..but I still love her.

i just saw it a few days ago and i thought it was an excellent movie. didnt like how tom cruise survived at the end... he would/should have been shot to pieces.

Hai hai!
I just recently bought the movie myself. Seen it about 5 times so far.
I must admit that at first, i didn't like the idea of Tom Cruise as the lead role either, but he was fairly decent in the film.
The story was great. I don't know about the rest of you but I found the ending to be very good. Somehow symbolic of the way of the samurai, something you'd expect to happen, at least I think.
Very happy, that romance wasn't developed, even tho I am a ****** for romance flicks heehee.

Overall I'd rate the movie 9/10 ^_^ then again I'm very easy to please :D

Fav part of the movie for me (besides the final battle scene) was the ninja battle (were they the Oniwanbanshu, or Shinsengumi ok maybe a little too much Kenshin eh?) anyway lol I must go out and get the soundtrack.

I'm looking forward to watching Troy and Van Helsing next :-)

oopS! i didn't know that was considered a banned word GOMEN
basically i LOVE romance flicks

Tom's beheading scene with the double katana was super lame. Not cool.

I had doubts at first with me not likeing Tom Cruse real much, but when I went to see it in the movies I loved it.
What's not to love?
The story stuck somewhat with the real event.
The battles were excellent.
I loved the battle with the Ninjas.

Yeah, I have to say ol' Tom pulled it off quite nicely but I'm sure they could have found someone better.

I'm pretty sure that casting Tom Cruise as the lead actor was just a way of promoting the film. I'm certain that there would be quite a few less people had their been someone cast who was more capable of the job. But, i'm not necissarily complaining about Tom's work in this film ^^
(I woulda' gone to see it anyways)

I had completely forgotten that they didn't wash their hair often back then 😊 You'd think I would've noticed that, I must've read Memoirs of a Geisha about 11 times now...*feels silly*

You make a good point Goggles, those bullets were definitely not aero-dynamic. Anyone could've been shot, that was definitely careless. But since it took someone to point it out to me, i'm not to terribly worried about it.

And yes, Tom Cruise should have died in the end. Because he would have died had he really been in a war. It occurs to me that if one of my captains went off to fight for the other team, and by the time the battle was over he was the only one left standing, i'd shoot the hell outta' him -.-
(of course i'd be on the Samurai's side anyways...)

Well, the reason he wasn't show was because all the men were bowing to respect what's his name, and the general he worked with was killed by Tom's own sword.

Heheh, quite honestly I have no idea. I'm not a very good judge of actors...I can tell the bad from the good - but I don't know if i'd be able to pull out the actors capable of pulling off this roll...
especially since i've seen the movie already.

tom was probably just trying to scaer the newbie.

You're probably right :)

Also, I couldn't think of someone either but I curious what everyone else had in mind...heh heh.

Whoa whoa. I didn't state the lame beheading to say Tom was completely awful. Just that part I thought was lame. And the bullets. LOL. Yeah there was a big discussion with my friends about whether Tom should of died, but that outcome didn't bother me as much as the patriotic ending.

What did sadden me though was the part when the 2nd in command died (the guy from Ringu). 2nd in command? I think so... anyway, you know who I'm talking about. He was so cool. It seems the gunner that was aiming at him was too lazy to fire at ALL the samurais. He probably just thought "oh what the heck, just keep shooting him"

Oh, and who can fill Tom's role? I guess you could never tell once you've seen the movie. You can have suggestions but you'll never be sure because you've already seen Tom.
