There are 3 types of characters in Japanese: Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.
After having learned HIRAGANA, these video series cover KATAKANA.
The katakana Alphabet has the same 46 letters as the HIRAGANA alphabet, just written in a different way. This means, both are phonetic symbols: each of the letters represents one syllable.
Katakana letters have been used mainly to write non-Chinese loan words, onomatopoeic words, foreign names, in telegrams and for emphasis (the equivalent of bold, italic or upper case text in English).
The katakana syllabary originated as abbreviations of Chinese characters. It's said that Buddhist monks of 9th century Japan created the katakana alphabet as a way to indicate the correct pronunciations of the Chinese texts they were studying.
In this video we'll start by covering how to write the first 10 letters in katakana: A,I,U,E,O (アイウエオ) and KA,KI,KU,KE,KO (カキクケコ)
