How many books do you buy a year?

One of my favourite shops in my town is Waterstones. For those not familiar, it is a chain of bookstores in the UK. Our local one isn't very large, but it does have a good selection of books. If I can't find what I want there I will be on Amazon or Play. Waterstones publish a magazine every quarter. In the recent one is a questionaire and one of the questions was "How many books do you buy per year?" I realised that I am in the top amount (their max was 35 or over). Doing a quick calculation I found that I normally buy about 70 books per year, just for myself. I wondered how many do you buy per year?

I'm not a big spender. 1-10. I used to be a real book worm, and still am a bit but tend to get library books rather than buy them.

I'm guessing 41-50, but it may be more. I buy books mainly from two places: The Speaking Tree in Glastonbury (isn't that just the best name for a bookshop you ever heard) and from Postscript by mail order. I read mainly science books, but also history and quality fiction. I love books more than people!

I love nothing more than spending hours and hours rummaging through 'quality' used book stores. There was a shop in Auckland called 'Hard to find books', it was great, like an old library you would find in a rambling mansion.
They refused to buy books that were too common or those horrid 'mills and boon' books, so you were guaranteed to find somethind decent to read.
There is seating available, so you can read books, and they are very very cheap too.
I cant bear to give up books once they are in my possession, so I have accumulated a fair few in my time.
I just hope they are being well looked after back in New Zealand.
My favourite books are auto-biographies, also I like to read up on anything that interests me at the time.
I hate to say it here, but I much prefer to look up information in an encyclopaedia than on the internet.
My dream is to have a HUGE room dedicated to books one day, in my house.
I think I too love books more than people.

We have a waterstone book store here in brussels, and although it has a good selection of books, I feel that it is way way overpriced. I have ben able to find the same books at a belgian store, in english with 10 euros or less in price.

For new stuff I go to the Barnes and Noble down the street, for older stuff I go to the Olde Bookshop, a place ive been going to since grade-school, or Black-sheep Books.

It's a long time since I've bought a new book, except as a present for someone, because whenever I go into a book store (like Waterstones) I feel too overwhelmed by the sheer amount of books and have no idea where to start For some reason second hand bookshops don't have that effect on me :? and I like to shop for second hand books... unfortunately I don't do much reading at all these days. I don't know why really I used to be keen on reading but now it seems like I never have time. I don't know about anyone else but I feel "guilty" to sit down with a book when I could be doing something more "useful" (i.e. practical). It's not helped by the fact that I have a job which involves sitting down all day, and I am a person who needs to keep physically active (both for my health and my sanity, such as it it!), and the idea of sitting down at home with a book has lost its appeal.

I do, however, read in the bath. Library books.

I ought to read more... I'll have to go to the "recommend a book" thread to get some good ideas!

Uhh... about the original question... I really have no idea... I think something between about 10 and 40...

I average somewhere between 20 - 30. Sci Fi mainly but mystery or fiction are also ok. There are several used bookstore around here that only buy good quailty books, so the prices aren't to bad. The libraries around here clean out the shelves once a year sometimes you find a deal there. The best place to read is the in the bath. Nobody bugs you (unless you only have 1 bathroom and in that case they just have to wait).

waterstones is a great bookstore, we have one in amsterdam!!!

i buy around 2 books a year.. to bad excually, because i would like to read more, but i just dont have time for it... or i work, or i study, and in the train i sleep lol... maybe in the future, i have more time for reading!!!!

I think I've read 11-20 books a year. I go to the local Barnes & Noble and find the latest book releases. So, I'm guessing Waterstones is like your Barnes & Noble or Barnes & Noble is like our Waterstones. Anyways, I like library books, but I must admit that I like buying books better because it means that I never have to return them and I can read them whenever I feel like reading them.

It really depends on my mood... I may not buy another book for a few months... I'd say between 20-50 a year.

Since the rise of the Web, I've found a significant proportion of my reading time has been taken over by browsing sites rather than books. As recently as the last few weeks I've also become fond of audiobooks. This has been inspired by purchasing an mp3 player that is the size of a cigarette lighter (Creative Muvo Micro N200) which I can carry around in a pocket and tune in for a few minutes relaxation any place, at any time.

I've slowed down a little in recent years ... but still must be in the 20-35 a year range. As a family, my wife and I have amassed well over 3000 books now.

I'm an absolute s*cker for Amazon.com these days! ( C'mon! It's not a rude word in that context, surely?)

Boy! Good question! I think I've read all of two books over the same number of years. Back when I was in the Navy and stationed onboard ships, I read my ebony posterior off, mainly Star Trek, horror novels and Mack Bolan books. But these days, I just don't have the time for books like I used to. My 52 inch HDTV is the main culprit taking up the majority of my idle time, hell, when I go into places like Waldenbooks or Barnes & Noble these days, it's to look only for manga!! Go figure!

A Few Years Back......

we used the PC to track every penny we spent. We both were shocked that the "books" section was close to $4000 for two years in a row. I spend too much time on the Forum nowdays to have much time to read, LOL.
