How do Japanese 1st Year Elementary teacher fix bad kanji writing

My son writes kanji badly the worst being writing 口, 日 not following stroke patterns like it is a perimeter of rectangle. Is there a reasoning to help on the correct stroke drawing?

There are lots of kanji practice books available for kids of that age at bookshops. It would be worth giving him the extra practice because these kanji are building blocks of more complicated ones.
