I can read hiragana fairly well, but when I try to transliterate romaji to hiragana, I have quite a bit of difficulty. I can recall some characters, but not all, and even when I can recall the characters, it takes a while. So my question is how can I recall hiragana characters better?

Same way you get better at anything: persistence and repetition.

In the same way as you get better at anything: lots of practice. (Edit: oops, ninja 'd by Mike)

That said, there really aren't that many kana characters, so it shouldn't take you all too long to get proficient at them. Really, they are the least of your worries when learning Japanese :)

If you think its being too difficult, use anki to memorize them. Theres is nothing that you cant memorize using Anki. But you have take your time practicing. That's only a tool to facilitate your study.

If you have trouble on how to use Anki, you can ask for help here too.

Are you learning kana one by one?

You may find that associating the kana you find difficult to remember with specific words helps (a is for apple, り is for りんご)

I'm learning them in groups, generally 10 at a time, and once I feel good with those ten I move on to the next (one group has 16 characters). But I'll definitely try that thanks.

Are you studying the language at the same time or are you trying to learn the characters first?

It may help if your writing practice is words and not just characters.

I've sort of started learning the actual language, but mostly I was trying to learn the characters first. I'll get started learning it more and see if that helps, thanks
