Wow.. A Japanese forum.. I am so glad I found it!
Well.. let me introduce myself.. my name is Heather, I'm from The Netherlands and I am 18 years old. For a very long time I wanted to learn how to speak Japanese, so I am going to start with it. I really hope that you guys can help me with this.. because well.. to be honest.. I don't have a clue where to begin. Should I start with Romaji? Or should I try to pronounce the words first? I really don't know what is the best..
Well.. for now I am going to browse through all the topics.. bye!

I guess it depends on your personal goals what kind of method of learning you have to adopt. I mean, if you want to speak it, you may start with Romaji and all, and learn Hiragana and Kanji at a later point. However, if you're more of a reader, I'd memorize the hiragana first etc..

The most important thing though, is that you have to persist in everything you do. Japanese is far from the easiest language to learn, but also a very beautiful language (in my opinion).

So what made you decide to learn Japanese? And whereabouts in Holland are you from if I may ask?

Well, I am more of a reader.. I don't think I will use much Japanese in conversations at the moment. But isn't it much easier to learn Romanji first and then Hiragana / Kanji .. even for reading? I noticed that it is much easier to write Hiragana if you know what the word is in Romanji.. but then once again.. how do Japanese people do it.. Romanji is for foreigners

For some reason I just always wanted to learn Japanese.. I love to watch Anime and it is just something that feels good to do. My whereabouts are in Twente.. so you can say I am a Tukker (I can't speak it though ☝)

Well you can start off by learning the 50 hiragana's. And I guess it would help if you know what the hiragana's mean, so in that sense it would definitely help to learn romaji too (not romaNji by the way).

I think Anime can be a good motivator to learn Japanese. But beware though, it will take a lot of effort to understand the language in Anime, especially things like slang. But with a bit of persistence, I'm pretty sure you'll get there!!

I've never been to Twente and I have absolutely no clue how the dialect sounds like.. I'm pretty sure I won't understand a word of it 'cos I'm very bad at dialects other than our Rotterdam accent.

At the moment I am watching video's called "Lets learn Japanese" it's real fun! That way I can also hear and learn how to pronounce the words.. boy did I have some words wrong
