No not your significant other ! I'm wondering if I can take the platter(disk) of a burned out hard drive and swap it to an identical good hard drive? Rather then pay several hundred dollars to a data recovery company, I'm thinking of doing a swap. I wonder if there is some kind of code or marker on the platter that will prevent another drive from reading from it. Anyone every try this?

If you are really serious about this, I would not recommend this. One false move on the heads, and you are pretty much SOL.

Your chances of getting the data back will be about 1:200,000

You will need to be a very good solderer. At least with a course in Micro Mins Soldering. Super clean area, and barely any EMI around the opened HDD case.

I bet it is your controller card. You will need to find an identical HDD, same model number, ROM code, brand name, size, etc, and switch the controllers. But still, it's not worth doing it.

If you have nearly $500 to $5000 you could send it to a recovery place, and have them place the opened HDD case in a special reader to get the information for you.
